What would happen if the Heapers went to Kmart and we were all like "OH YEAH! WE ARE AT KMART! ATTENTION KMART SHOPPERS! WE ARE AT KMART!" but then the manager of the Kmart was a Kmart manager and she was all like "stop being so loud, here at kmart!" and we were like "oh yeah? stop being Kmart where we're so loud!" and the Kmart manager was like "you know, that's a very good point" and so she had all her Kmart employees pick up the Kmart and move it somewhere else but we got left behind and we're all like "OH YEAH! WE ARE NO LONGER AT KMART!"

The other day in Social Psych we got off on a tangent about whether Target or Wal-Mart is better.
I said "Well, we can all agree on something: At least it's not Kmart."
At which point the professor returned to the lecture.

I don't know much about UK retail chains, unfortunately. I suppose I could read up on them but usually I've focused mainly on the US because those are stores I can actually physically visit, at least sometimes...

If I click the Dropbox icon and click "Open Dropbox Folder", it pulls it up in Nautilus.
I didn't even know my computer had Nautilus, I use frickin' Xfce!
Well I live in a place where there are no payphones at all. Montana has an abysmal amount of them due to teenagers destroying them ritually, so they just vanished altogether. I went to North Dakota once, and saw one, and just fell in love with it and hung out in it for a long time. It's a glass box with a phone inside.

I haven't seen a proper phone booth since I was like 6. Most of the payphones you see around here are the kind that are...you know, not in booths. And thanks to cell phones, even those have become rarer in the past 10 years or so...

What's that, Ben?
Behold the rain which descends from heaven upon our vineyards, there it enters the roots of the vines, to be changed into wine, a constant proof that God loves us, and loves to see us happy.
(Source: Isaacson, Walter. Benjamin Franklin: An American Life. New York: Simon and Schuster, 2003. p.374.)
If only I lived in a house full of wine...OH WAIT, I'M ME, AND I DO!
There are still a lot of payphones here, but they've been on the decline for a while now, I guess because of the rise of mobiles. They also tend to be plastered with advertisements nowadays.
I feel like BT are trying to phase them out; calls are more expensive than they used to be and in a lot of places they are vanishing or being taken down. I want them to stay, though; I like them and I think they're still convenient.
Some of the older individual kiosks (in particular many K6s, which are something of a British icon) are now listed buildings, which means they're there to stay. The models from the 1980s onwards (i.e. around the time the telephones were privatized), not so much.

I remember when the Columbus Metropolitan Library (specifically the Main branch downtown) started removing their payphones around 2007 or so. They put up some signs announcing the change, the gist of it being that AT&T wasn't going to service them anymore and the Library wasn't going to bother seeking out a new provider.
Oddly, even though they've done some renovations since then, they left the recessed areas in the walls where the phones used to be, complete with the shelf underneath for the phonebook that hasn't been there for years.
Back in the 1980s and very early 1990s, there was a real, honest-to-God phone booth in the little town where we lived, near the road. We actually used that payphone several times when our main phone was cut off for non-payment (which, at one point, was happening quite a bit).
Now, if you find a payphone at all outside of an airport or train station, you're pretty lucky. Convenience stores don't bother anymore, because everyone -- everyone -- has cell phones, and who goes to the mall anymore?
Now I feel quite fortunate. It sounds like there are loads of payphones still standing here, compared to where you guys are.
Although there are also a fair few empty kiosks, which seem kind of depressing to me. There's an MVM 1000 (not a BT kiosk) just up the road that's been empty for as long as I've lived here.
Just being a tad hyperbolic; people do still go to the mall, but a lot of the time, it ain't for what's in the mall. Fashion Centre at Pentagon City is atop an extremely busy Metrorail station, Ballston Commons and Springfield Mall are adjacent to stations, and Manassas Mall would probably have been plowed under for a lifestyle center if Target and Walmart hadn't shown up.

Now I'm recalling the time my family got in a fender-bender in Whitehall, by the old Big Bear. The parking lot had two payphones, and my brother wanted to use them to call Mother and tell her why we'd be late, but I reminded him that Dad had a cellphone we could use instead.
That was...May 2007, I think? I wonder if those phones are still there.

America does not give two shits about payphones.
Probably because cheap ass cell phones that don't even require contracts are like...$10.
You have to buy minutes, mind you. But you can walk into any electronics store and have a working phone that you can talk on for a good 30 minutes for like $20.
"I didn't get a mobile for a very long time. I'm not sure why I resisted the idea so much, looking back, but I just didn't want one."
I HATED the idea that I could be bugged by anyone at anytime.
Thing is...I still do. I just let my answering machine get it most times unless I know who is calling.
Still, my smart phone has GPS, Internet, maps, e-mail, and I love it.
^ That reminds me of an article I read about how Blackberrys were supposedly a major cause of stress because having one meant you were effectively at work (or on standby) wherever you went.
The payphones thing sounds something I would really dislike about living in America... but I guess I might have to get used to it, if BT does end up phasing them out.

I got my first cell phone when I was 16. I didn't use it very much at all, because I never really left the house without at least one of my parents.
My current phone...honestly, I use it for internet and texting and stuff more than I use it for making calls. Making calls on it is actually a bit of a pain, because you have to find your Contacts on the touchscreen, whereas the older cheaper phones let me just hold down a button to get to speed dial.
The same one that was on Hamilton Road?
Nah, this one was on Main Street. Big Bear had locations everywhere back before they went under.

Smart phones means I can check and answer E-mail ANYWHERE at ANYTIME.
Thing is, I don't really feel obligated to check it after I've put in my 8 hours for the day or it's the weekend. So, I would call it more of a convenience rather than a stress.
T-Virus is drunk.
I believe I told Mr. Franklin that I would have some wine...

Speaking of which, this is probably a good time to switch to mobile-posting. Bed awaits...
I use a rather battered LG KP235, which I've had for years now. Never felt the need for a more expensive one, since I use it to text and make calls, that's it.

Payphones are convenient if you forget your mobile, and the proper kiosks provide shelter if it rains, to varying extents.
