" Frankly, I don’t think there’s ever been or ever will be an attack on Yudkowsky quite as devastating as just explaining Roko’s Basilisk. Or the malaria nets. Seriously, “oh yeah and there’s a weird overlap between his readers and these racist nutjobs” doesn’t hold a candle to Roko’s Basilisk in terms of getting people to think Yudkowsky is out of his fucking skull. "
I based one of the passages in the snake-people Bible-thing in my work on Roko's Basilisk, because ultimately it's such a strangely mediaeval or even ancient Greek idea.
I have based tabletop game deities on it before. It really is a terrific idea, just a stupid one in the real world.
In a nutshell: Computer God of the Singularity revolutionises the world *sparkles~!* and decides to punish those who unwittingly impeded its creation by reconstructing their mind-states and putting them in Ellisonian Computer Hell.
It's a "basilisk" because thinking about it, assuming that it's correct, is inherently dangerous. Roko was a LessWrongite who proposed it.
In any case, the concept of a messianic cult developing around the idea that the coming god will damn all those who prevented his earlier coming and reward those who hastened it is a beautiful fantasy or alt-history set-up.
non-hyperbolically: a hypothetical AI that is so intelligent as to be indistinguishable from a god, that would condemn to eternal torment anyone--living or not--that did not directly help fund its construction.
Inherently I don't think it's any more or less silly than any religious belief, but the cause for derision is its believers' refusal to admit that that's what it is. Many of the people who push for the concept swear it's the most logical thing in the world.

Because all messianic cultists believe that they're objectively right and use crazy conjectures to "prove" their faith. The only difference is these guys act like they walked out of Stephenson's Anathem.

I'm so glad cell phone manufacturers finally settled on 5V USB chargers as a standard.
Remember the bad old days, even just like 10 years ago, when phone chargers all had different voltages and using the wrong charger would fry your phone, even if the plug physically fit?
I have to thank Kraken for shattering the romanticized image I had about Singapore. Just...the constant state of terror and fear he seemed to live in, frightened me.
Those that desire an autocratic regime are privileged to have never lived in one.
I know this is mean, but Channing Tatum looks like a humanised bull terrier, except that he would be infinitely cuter as a bull terrier. Which is sad, because he seems genuinely nice and smart. But he is odd-looking.
The name Channing Tatum makes me think of Idris Elba, and the name Idris Elba makes me think of someone like Idris Elba but twice as cool and attractive and other descriptors.
