I really hate this whole dumbass superhero trend eating pop culture right now, not because superhero movies are necessarily bad but because it's really no different from the Generic YA Dystopia => Prefab Blockbuster craze that fizzled out recently and the unwitting monolith of nerd culture seems blind to the fact that they are just another courted demographic in this scheme.

I'm glad that the Deadpool movie actually worked and was fun, and I'm sad that your friend is obsessed with a bullshit narrative about corporations, but we're giving this forced meme so much credit that it does not deserve and I just wish we'd talk about other sorts of movies for once, my god.

we could talk about like, Summer Wars

I am seriously tempted to go full Situationist at this point and accuse you all of being duped by the Spectacle thinking that the mainstream cannibalising your subcultural artefacts makes you special, but nobody here really buys into that line of thinking. But so many do, or think that they matter to these companies because their interests have been the next in the line for co-option. It's delusional and childish and entitled and actively undermines so much of actual interest coming out of "nerd culture" that is reflective of actual paradigm shifts.

    Mamoru Hosoda makes cute movies.

well this is a strange and unknown srednihavior
  • Touch the cow. Do it now.
sometimes you just wanna watch a nerd movie
  • I liked Summer Wars

apparently the main plot is like the exact same as one of the director's previous movies but I haven't seen that one.
  • We can do anything if we do it together.
Yeah, I don't get why me liking one capeshit film out of like 10,000 makes me a brainwashed specimen ruining culture or whatever.

    Could we, please.

I had stopped, but then Sredni said what he said and now I'm confused about where I stand and kinda upset.

If I talk about it any further here I'll upset all of you, too, and I don't know how to handle it.

I'm sorry, everybody. Enjoy your night. I'll find a way to calm down.

I wish I were more familiar with cinema as an artform in general

I am also mostly tired of comic book superheroes, or at least the Marvel Cinematic Universe and all its waves of inept imitators we're going to be subjected to. The MCU used to be fun to me but it has become tedious and most of it will probably be half-remembered at best in a decade or two

I really hope the public gets tired of this stuff soon

    uhh are you ok

    I'm just...

I am so sick of talking about the Nerd Cultural Discourse surrounding these big stupid bandwagon trends, partly because I don't actually care about superheros or superhero movies and partly because so much of it feels like a bunch of prissy entitled people maundering about shit that doesn't matter in their little aseptic bubble while real shit is going down within their own subculture that reflect the even bigger shifts going on outside.

The doors of enthusiast culture are being forced open to all the people who were either there all along or would have been there if they could, just like everywhere else, and there are people from the inside fighting this at every turn. That Hollywood has co-opted another "outsider" subculture for monetary gain is such old news; that this culture is being transformed from within just as this culture at large is being transformed isn't, however, but we're focusing on the showbiz crap because it's big and flashy and means nothing.

I'm not saying we shouldn't talk about superhero movies, but let's talk about them like any other sort of big-budget money-maker, good or bad, not like they're fucking special. The idea that they are special is part of the illusion meant to distract from the true performance.
  • “I'm surprised. Those clothes… but, aren't you…?”

Yeah, I don't get why me liking one capeshit film out of like 10,000 makes me a brainwashed specimen ruining culture or whatever.

That wasn't even my point. I said I thought that Deadpool being good was a good thing. Big movies shouldn't suck, let alone ones based on existing works that are so hard to pull off well.

Stop blaming yourself for people being angry about things that ultimately have nothing to do with you. It's not healthy or wise.

    Yeah, you're not wrong there.

I think my posts here and in my thread are is the culmination of thoughts that have been building up inside me for a while, honestly, and I think it's the same with you. It was a very nasty sort of timing.

I was the one acting like a right brat tonight and I'm sorry for putting all of you through that.

In the house not home behind closed doors
They hide their fakes between the floors
In the house not home under the bed
Stories are told and lies are spread

replace ME with T&B and you've got my dilemma
  • in other news, "dilemma" is a good word
  • My problem is compounded further by the fact that there is so little good video game discourse, especially online, especially with BioWare games, ESPECIALLY with Mass Effect, and holy shitballs **ESPECIALLY** with Mass Effect 3.
  • for years i have been looking for this track (it was either breakcore or an uptempo trance thing, maybe gabber?) that extensively samples dialogue from The Dover Boys, and I have been unable to find it, or remember who produced it

    A Digimon movie.

Which came to America as the second part of our version of the Digimon movie, which was actually three Digimon movies edited together.

third part if you count the Angela Anaconda part at the start
