what room does it have to improve itself into? it seems like runaway AI scenarios assume that the AI could always improve itself neigh-infinitely in the amount of space it's given
it seems like Evil Hypothetical AI lives in a world where it's given full access to the 90s Hacker Movie Internet where every electrical device can be hacked remotely if your L33T H@XORZ level is high enough?
It always strikes me as weird that Britain has had such a disproportionate effect on world politics given its relatively small size and island location.
Then again, the Roman Empire started out as a city-state with delusions of grandeur.

anyway a lot of science fiction with the AI self improvement gimmick is like that, with the AI being frustrated by their limits. in Marathon, Durandal (cursed be his name) engineers an alien invasion solely to escape the door control computer

this has often struck me as odd, too
i mean i know it happened because we were bastards to a lot of people in history, but it's still weird that it happened
I saw a joke once, this book jacket about an alternate history where this little Celtic island takes over the world, and all the blurbs are like "incredibly well researched... makes it seem almost plausible"
You are the end result of a “would you push the button” prompt where the prompt was “you have unlimited godlike powers but you appear to all and sundry to be an impetuous child” – Zero, 2022
I was up at 3 AM reading a Wikia article about Ariana Dumbledore and I can't even remember how I got there
so i'm in a science communication class, and the prof was talking about how "keeping it real" in black culture could be an anti-science thing, and i am pretty confused
there was no elaboration! just like, throwing that out there! and i didn't want to ask.
i mean the rest was mostly fine. people think of scientists as mean old white dudes. this is a problem and discourages everybody else. straightforward things

yud has a thought experiment game thing where an AI tries to talk its way out of the box and is generally successful. ofc, yud.
I know because it's on his Crowning Moment of Awesome TvT page.

admittedly, using people would imply some kind of Ancient Order of Door Openers, so it might be worth it

Then, humanity discovered that paradise does not last forever.
"We live on an island that won't be here."
"How [can we] protect this island for the longest amount of time before we have to evacuate?"
Time for me to GTFO.
