It's weird that twitter marxists consider Mumford and Sons a fascist band, because a lot of the people who hate them here hate them because they're uber-conservative rockists who think they're hipster wimps.
I will agree on one thing: all Asian superheroes have pretty much been off the mark. I see none of myself in the Great Ten, Lady Shiva, or any of it, because they've all been formed by creators who aren't me, or of my kin. These people wouldn't know, couldn't know.
But I deny that "American" has "universal appeal." The American Dream seems rotted, deluded, naive to me. Of course, it wasn't always to me, but I was a kid back then. And that's the thing, if a kid would eat up superhero comics with white folks because they don't know better, wouldn't they also eat up superhero comics with Asians too?
Superhero comics don't need to apologize for what it is, because what it is has already changed. What it needs to do is complete its transformation.
"Try to adapt the superhero comic’s conventions to an Asian context and the genre collapses under the weight of traditional Asian values: humility, self-effacement, respect for elders and communal harmony. American comic book heroes also act in the service of the collective good, but they do so, unabashedly, out of a heightened sense of self. How can an Asian superhero take down the bad guy without embarrassing both the bad guy’s family and his own? How do you save the world and save face at the same time? The Asian comic superhero is a contradiction in terms."
The same goes for the heroes of major Japanese mangas, like Astro Boy and Devilman. Though their origin stories tend to be mystical or supernatural — as opposed to familial (Batman, the orphan myth), societal (Superman, the immigration myth) or political (The Incredible Hulk, the nuclear disaster myth) — in most other respects these characters are just rip-offs of the American comic book canon.
If all he can point to are Astro Boy and Devil Man, then he knows less than nothing, because the Japanese superhero does not exist in comics. Astro Boy and Devil Man are most assuredly not superheroes; one is a science fictional Pinnochio and the other is a monster tearing apart other monsters.
Man is a most complex simple creature: see what he weaves, and how base his reasons for doing so.
Every identity has two sides: the side that faces the world, and the side that faces within. For us, humility and communal harmony is only one facet of the side that faces the world.
"people who go really hard over like hating villains and hating their fanbases and being so disappointed in anyone who so much as shows the slightest appreciation for anything even slightly morally impure are like the obnoxious vegans of fandom"

I was wondering about that too
But actually looking it up would just lead to disappointment
