Y'know i don't think Penn and Teller should have been debunking political theories or environmental science OR religions and pseudoscience
surely the point in having magicians do this stuff is to have them show up fraudsters (regardless of ideology or purpose) by exposing their use of the same sleight of hand tricks that magicians use?
If there's one thing /r/atheists cannot do, it's limiting themselves to the job at hand.
I miss being able to talk about my feelings, instead of just internalizing them for some eternally upcoming meeting with a psychiatrist who I will see for fifteen minutes, who will then schedule a therapist who I will drive an hour to see each way and talk to for thirty minutes a month.

It's cool though, because time is unlimited, and it's totally going to produce semi-useful results once I've finally hit the bullseye while blindfolded, and 50 years from now, I will be living a semi-tolerable life.

Man is a most complex simple creature: see what he weaves, and how base his reasons for doing so.
It's an unfortunate oversight, the words mean nothing to anyone who isn't an English speaker, we don't even think in Latin alphabets, it will have absolutely no effect, and the PRC government would not allow it if they thought it had a chance in being subversive.

Like, did these people honestly think we say "Tiananmen Square" to each other? That we'd regularly use three Chinese words and one English one in everyday parlance?
Because we don't. We say "Tiananmen Guangchang." That's five Chinese words.

I always figured the idea, at least for people like Houdini or Randi, was to expose people who use trickery to prey on others instead of for entertainment--e.g., Randi exposnig Peter Popoff, who to this day is still taking money from desperate people.
Where Penn & Teller overstepped that, IMO, is that they had to go and use their show as a platform for their political ideology as well...

And you can use chicanery to con someone into joining a religious movement or buying into homeopathy, and that's within their remit i think.
But it's not trickery to just think something that Penn and Teller don't.

What about stuff like conspiracy theories, which don't necessarily harm the people who believe in them, but geniunely coarsen public discourse?
But once you start widening the net you're opening up to these murkier ideological areas.
Yeah, I can agree with that.
There is still a lot of bullshit in the U.S. that falls into those areas that could stand to be debunked by a show like Penn & Teller's, though.
Of course, they ultimately added to that bullshit rather than took away from it. I still find that a real shame, considering how much I still like their general personas.
Sometimes it feels like everything has to be all or nothing here.
Like i suppose what i said would entail a fairly drastic change and some of the good material would be thrown out with the bad.
But i don't think they're necessarily the best people to be debunking conspiracy theories and whatnot, i'd say let them expose parlour tricks and leave the more complex issues to people with a more nuanced understanding of them.

Be better than keeping things pent up.
Up to you though.
Perhaps the assumption is that everyone speaks English.

But yes ok that was worth debunking.
Just that stepping outside their original remit was what led to them attempting to debunk social justice movements, global warming, conservation, etc.

This was below the belt, and obviously not what we were talking about.
I apologize. I dislike the "all or nothing" mentality around here, too.

This is a smart and devious robot.
