Administrative Policy applies here as it does anywhere else on the Wiki. The particular part that is most relevant to the forums is "Nastiness and dickery: will not be tolerated". In other words, don't be a dick.
We wish to maintain an atmosphere of mutual respect. We request that you behave civilly. Failure to do so may result in a ban.
No bigotry, pedophilia, rape-o-philia, or gay bashing. We're not interested in those opinions. Go away.
All other rules are subordinate to these.
Personal attacks are prohibited.
If you're debating with somebody, attack their arguments, not the person.
Don't create crowners or threads complaining about your fellow tropers. Banning comes pretty quickly for that one. * It's safe to assume that once is enough for a ban.
If it's patently obvious who you're talking about, the fact that you didn't mention their name doesn't make it "not a personal attack". You may safely assume that moderators are at least as capable of figuring out who you're talking about as the rest of the posters are. Most of the time.
There is a yellow holler button◊ above every post, which can be used to report that post to the moderators. We encourage you to use it whenever you see a disruptive or rule-breaking post.
Please do not attempt to engage a troll in an insult-slinging match, or make posts about how so-and-so is a troll, idiot, etc. These are still personal attacks, still off-topic and still disruptive. Instead, simply hit the holler button and report the post in question.
Threads that are just complaining will be locked or deleted. The purpose of the forum is to provide a place to converse. There are lots of other places where you can go if all you want to do is bitch. Threads talking about why you don't like something are acceptable, as long as the "why" is more of the thread than the announcing that you don't like it. "Unpopular Opinions" threads are not allowed. They overwhelming turn into complaining.
Contentless snowclone threads are prohibited and will be deleted. A content-less snowclone is a thread which serves no purpose other than to make a pun based on the name of an existing thread. In the past they have been known to spread rapidly, but the current policy is to lock or zap any pointless snowclone thread immediately. Contrary to past statements, this is treated as a serious rule violation, and may well result in a warning or ban.
There is one sex thread. The fetishes thread in Yack Fest. Others will be zapped on sight. And, No, that does not mean that it's okay to have cybersex there.
If you don't like a thread, don't post in it. Posting in a thread simply to say you don't like it, or that it's stupid, or to point out that you 'knew who made it before you even clicked on it', or to predict that it will end badly will get you warned. Doing so repeatedly may result in a ban.
Don't make "link-discuss" threads. Use the Article Dump if all you want to do is call attention to an article you read. Or, if it's something about writing, or would be of specal interest to writers and aspiring writers, you can put it in the Writer's Block Article Dump.
Never import drama here from another site. It is easy: No threads about events on another forum. Any user who does so will face an immediate ban. This means don't use our forums for a battleground, don't encourage or instigate others to use our forums as a battleground, don't use our forums as a launching pad for a fight, and don't drag us into a fight somewhere else. Please see the next post for a more detailed look at what we consider Importing or Exporting Drama.
You may have no more than 10 user accounts. There is an automated system which will site ban users with more than 10 accounts.
Do not post illegal material or links to illegal material.
This includes pirate sites, warez, and illegal torrents.
This also includes asking for links to such material.
Do we really have to say it? Do not post porn or explicit sexual content. Not even if you tag it NSFW. Don't post it. Don't link to explicit porn images either. Shock sites and rickrolling are not permitted.
Links to sites with NSFW ads (like Danbooru) are not allowed either. Please find sites without NSFW ads to host an image.
No posting any paedophilia/loli/shota links, text or images. Just no.
Links to other more mild NSFW content that does not violate the above rules (girls in bikinis, violence, things that are just gross) should be tagged.
Hate speech will not be tolerated. Read the linked page if you don't know what Hate Speech is.
No advertising.
Do not post for the sole or primary purpose of advertising your own or any third-party site or product.
New accounts are restricted from posting external links for a short period of time to prevent spamming. Attempting to circumvent this by putting links in your signature may be grounds for a ban.
All external links should be relevant to the conversation in which they are occurring.
Hottipped or enbedded doesn't matter — only one (not one of each).
Making runs of consecutive posts, each with one embedded or hottipped avvie will be treated as trying to end-run the restriction, and may result in a ban.
Certain subforums have their own specific rules. Please make sure you know the rules of that subforum before posting there.
No derails in On-Topic Conversations,
No exclusive clubs in Trope Covens, and
Try to stick to the guidelines in Forum Games and Trope Repair Shop.
On thread necromancy versus the creation of new threads: Neither one is de facto "bad form" here. Either is acceptable, depending on the thread and why it's being brought up again.
If the new post is in response to something relevant in the old thread, it makes more sense to necro the old one rather than try to recap the whole previous discussion.
If the new post is tangential or only partially related to the old thread, making a new thread may make more sense.
If the old thread degenerated into a fight or shitposting, there's no point in trying to necro it — it will simply pick back up with fighting or shitposting, 95 times out of a hundred.
On the left-hand side of the forum, it's almost always preferable to necro an old thread in Trope Repair or Image Picking than to make a new one.
The only things close to rules that we have about necro'ing an old thread is "don't necro just for lulz" and "don't necro to continue a fight."
While we can be more relaxed about the language here than on the main wiki, please don't put the word "fuck" in your title or signature. It's tacky and it annoys some folks. There is an autosweeper that will delete it if you do; putting it back will be regarded as an act of hostility and may result in a ban.
No more than one additional embedded or hotlinked avatar per post.
The avatar that is automatically attached to every post you make isn't counted.
You may embed one additional avvie in each post.
Hottipping [[hottip:*:url]] does the same thing to the server load as embedding, and therefore counts as one per hottip.
You can link as many as you want in each post using the [[urlhere tag here]] markup.
LOOK AT THAT.
RULES.
RULES OUT THE ASS.
WHY DO PEOPLE INSIST THAT THE ONLY RULE ON THE WHOLE SITE IS "DON'T BE A DICK"? IT'S CLEARLY NOT.
Spain: "Clearly not entirely mentally stable" is quite a bit worse than anything anyone else was saying about him, you realize. As for the allcaps, please tone it down a bit.
I've learned to tolerate drama...except on the boat
I remember people taking issue with him as far back as the original IJBM. It was usually over stuff like locking the Sonichu pages and those related to them; I think people caring about the more serious stuff came later.
I'm sorry, it's just very annoying to me when people insist that there's only one rule on the site when there's an entire thread about rules that goes into quite a bit of detail.
I guess I understand that. People were pretty inconsiderate to old FE, even 'before' all this stuff started popping up.
Exactly.
I'm sorry I flipped out, but seriously....
"Clearly not entirely mentally stable" is quite a bit worse than anything anyone else was saying about him, you realize.
Not really. He has some issues, but he's not evil.
I could've phrased it better, but I think I made myself clear.
o_o But there are a bunch of rules there that no one ever follows! :o Were those rules made because everyone was doing that stuff or were those always there?
Depends on the specific rule.
My point is that everyone likes to blame everything on FE personally or his "policies", and that I am very annoyed by that.
Wait why did I join this conversation? >.< I think this is kind of a bad habit on this forum: all of us arguing about/discussing the forum we came from at length and the problems that it has.
I wanted to stop like three pages ago, but everyone is so concerned with Eddie for some reason.
I actually like the wiki. It's a decent read when it's not busy being fanboy-ey, which is surprisingly little of the time considering what it is.
I actually quite liked the forums for a long time too. I still sort of do, actually. My main problem was that, at a certain point, TVTropes stopped being TVTropes and started being just another site on the internet, and I am afraid I cannot explain my issues with it any better than that.
So.
Whatever. I don't know what I'm trying to say anymore.
I got an idea for a short story the other day. It's about a contortionist who moves to a new school and doesn't fit in.
This sounds like something Haven would say.
It's fun to read, but it's userbase seems to treat it like a legitimate resource.
This is one of the things that's changed over time. Because this was definitely not always the case.
I certainly don't. You shouldn't really treat any wiki as a resource for anything other than general knowledge with the possible exception of Wikipedia.
You are the end result of a “would you push the button” prompt where the prompt was “you have unlimited godlike powers but you appear to all and sundry to be an impetuous child” – Zero, 2022
For some reason, I find the OH 104 freeway kinda fun, even if it is just a generic suburban freeway.
Also its first exit (eastbound) is called Impound Lot Road. Gee, I wonder what that road leads to...
Remember back in the 50s when they'd record like Elvis singing YOU AIN'T NOTHIN BUT A HOUND DOG and then they'd turn the record over and reverse it and it was all NYERP NYERP NYERP NYERP NYERP and people were all like, "That is actually the voice of Satan coming from that song."
I'm not sure why I'm suddenly wonderposting in "Last post wins" and the Desu thread all of a sudden. Maybe it's because I feel de-stressed after finishing most of my Bio projects?

Assassin poems, Poems that shoot
guns. Poems that wrestle cops into alleys
and take their weapons leaving them dead

EDIT: Derp. Started an argument.
Blixty, I'm so sorry.

Milkshakes are good.
When I say "resource" I mean....well.
Basically, something is a resource if you'd put information you found there in a research paper. In my view.
Also its first exit (eastbound) is called Impound Lot Road. Gee, I wonder what that road leads to...
this kid:
made this:
what in the flying fuck is going on here.
He looks like he's six.
What the hell, I'm 18 and I can't rap that well.
>:x
well probably, actually. Would help if I ever practiced.
Either that or he's one of those kids that's been rapping since he was old enough to talk.
Also I am trying to picture that voice coming out of that face and I just can't.
I no longer have to picture.
HE'S A FUCKING VENTRILOQUIST TOO?!
I think I've actually managed to make a legitimately good uptempo track for once.
I'm tempted to actually tag this as Electro Swing, because it's similar to it, if not quite there.
BOREDOM
BUG
but wonderposting is at least partly what this forum's about, silly.
