Eh, I do the same. I mean, suspension of disbelief only goes so far.
I mean, magical ponies we can buy, but we've been shown that despite being a bit more hysteria prone than humans, the ponies more or less act and rationalize things like humans.
You and I seem to have almost the EXACT reaction to these murder fics, where even if we can buy the initial premise, we can't justify the logistics of what is going on.

...For some reason I'm re-reading the posts from back when YF's MLP:FIM thread had that extended derail about transgender ponies.

I liked "No country for old men", but I never really understood why people talked about it like it had somehow revolutionized a genre or how that particular character was the "scariest thing ever".
The Coen brothers attempted to write him as if he was "death itself" or a force of nature. To me, he was just a well done man of few words killer type who liked to play mind games with people.
Y'know how tropers have a bad habit of massively overstating the emotional impact things they saw/heard/read had on them in the Crowners/X Fuel/Radar/whatever pages? Same thing applies here.

(And weirdly, the part that embarrasses me isn't even so much that I was still confused as fuck about my gender, but the fact that I kept going on about how wanting to examine the concept in such detail made me some kind of freak. Bizarre.)

In my case, I meant people in general, or even how the film industry seemed to react.
The film has a 95% on Rotten Tomatoes, but I feel the audience reaction of 84% to be closer to what I felt the movie deserved.
Then again, it's fully of some of those "heady" notions that Hollywood critics tend to gobble up, so that would easily describe the "hype" and how I felt the actual film wasn't quite that great.

You know what's annoying? When people decide you're going too slow, but instead of going around you they just get right up on you.
I was coming up Ohio 315 this morning at like 4:30, doing 60 in a 55 (partly because I didn't know where I was going and partly because I'd rather not get a speeding ticket when I'm on the other side of town) and some guy in an SUV tailagated me for like 4 miles despite the other two lanes being entirely clear the whole time. Bluh.
Remember back in the 50s when they'd record like Elvis singing YOU AIN'T NOTHIN BUT A HOUND DOG and then they'd turn the record over and reverse it and it was all NYERP NYERP NYERP NYERP NYERP and people were all like, "That is actually the voice of Satan coming from that song."
To be honest, the only webcomics I read regularly anymore are Brawl in the Family and Awkward Zombie. I find them more fun to read, and in my experience, they have relatively little of that aspect of stereotypical webcomics.
I just posted that Penny Arcade comic because I remember Justice posting it once.
I think part of the reason I like both Romantically Apocalyptic and Listening to 11.975 MHz is that neither of them has any of that "thinly-veiled author soapbox" thing going on.

squid: I know, I just didn't expect a derail about being annoyed by pissy ranting via webcomics. I felt a bit guilty about that.

Why am I still thinking about stop signs? They're not very interesting.

It's alternately amusing and embarrassing.

It's largely apolitical, the plot's decent, the characters are interesting and I'm quite sure that the comic uses your favorite word at least once.
(the packaging, not the beer; i haven't tasted it)
two things
1) the "Magical Negro" concept long predates TVTropes itself. It's made fun of pretty often.
2) even if it didn't, this is the biggest overreaction I've seen in quite some time.

The one that I always try to say without actually saying it.

Better than diurnal.
"Crepuscular"? It's rare I encounter a word I do not know the meaning of.
My favorite word is probably "complex"
