Only those characters people who are very into their jobs would have magic spells largely based on their jobs. Of course, there are quite a few such people.
How do people's magic repertoires change over time?
Actually that's kinda a cool idea. Magic repertoires changing over time, based on what people know and remember and think of. It's kinda like real-life skills and stuff.
So if someone played lots of swords-and-sorcery videogames, they might gain a magic repertoire themed on swords-and-sorcery fantasy, such as summoning dragons, and fire/ice/bolt spells, and the like. then let's say they get over that phase and become interested in sci-fi games, they begin to forget their dragon summons and wizardly spells and instead gain laser-shooting and teleportation spells.
thus, the magic someone knows is directly related to the stuff they work on and do a lot of.
Maybe you could tell a lot about a person based on the spells they use. You can tell, say, whether they're really into their work (someone might have mapping and visualization spells, or pollution purification spells, or spells for stabilizing dying people) or if they just hold a job but are really into something else in their lives.
I suspect sex-related spells would be in the repertoire for a good number of people. Whether we'd want to portray these depends on the kind of story we want to tell and/or the rating and audience we'd like to get.
So if you'd like your magic to never change, make sure you keep the things related to spells that you like fresh in your mind. If you really love that spell that gives you multiple clones of yourself that trail you and duplicate your actions, keep Gradius as part of your life. That doesn't necessarily mean play it all the time, but it just means that not forgetting about it.
@glennmagusharvey: What if someone spends all their time casting spells and that, in and of itself, is their passion?
then whatever conception they have of their spells is manifested. geometric shapes, perhaps, or bursts of magical energy. maybe something to fit their emotions. possibly unmitigated local disaster.
it's funny how, thanks to one AMV that used the song "Endless Tears" but titled it both "Endless Tears" and "Love is a Beatiful Pain", half of the AMVs now that use that song call it by the latter name.

but there's just something about them that is timeless
and none of them were ever amusing. not even vaguely.
