Well, it works like this. Your long-term memory has basically unlimited storage capacity, but you can't use it all at once--you'd never be able to sort out what's relevant, or even what's real. So we can work with around seven pieces of information at a time, which get pulled into our working memory (mainly by associations) and put back when we're done. Working memory is also called short-term memory--new information enters the brain that way, and is accessible until it's converted into long-term memory by the hippocampus.
(Incidentally, this model is very useful for solving problems: the things we think of are essentially how we play with chunks of memory which get pulled into our brain. So if you're having trouble solving a problem, it might not be that you don't know the information, just that some other chunk of memory is blocking it, or interacting with it in a way that gives you a perspective that isn't very useful. So the reason it usually helps to do something else if you've got a mental block like that is because you come back to the problem with a fresh set of associations, which bring up different pieces of information entirely--or which can be combined with the information in different, and perhaps more useful ways.)

Valentine's was kind of a normal day for me, too. I don't have a girlfriend (not officially, anyway), so I don't really have anyone to get flowers or cards for, and eating out tonight with anyone is a bad idea, as me and the parents found out earlier. Even the places that don't have a 2-hour-plus wait (and that aren't fast food) will have a slammed kitchen and will likely screw up your order.
That said, I don't hate Valentine's, and I think the people Tno was talking about earlier need a 55-gallon drum of Preparation H. :P
I think it's amazing that I only have, really, two characters that I've ever showed pictures of to anyone. And I've seen that macro in relation to them about...oh, a dozen times now?
