So I'm reading a story about how an angry soccer player punched a ref and ended up killing him, on two different sites, and the comments are a sociology study in and of themselves. On ABC News, you see a lot of people saying he should be tried as an adult and that the rule of law should prevail, while on The Blaze (which appears to be a right-wing site), all the commenters want him killed, preferably as harshly as possible, and the few that ask for mercy in this are written off as "liberal PC wimps" (to condense several comments into one phrase).
I know about the Greater Internet Fuckwad Theory, but damn, how did we get so cruel?
More people have said that and been killed than there are thorium decay products.
The reason why deadly violence can happen on a street and everyone will pretend to not see it is that people are afraid of drawing attention to themselves and breaking unspoken rules. It is also the reason that, in a disaster, many people will still ignore the warnings, thinking that they are just an unaffected observer, only to be killed. Germany stood by and watched much of its population be lined up and killed.
On the internet, the rules are gone, and so are the repercussions. People can say and do whatever they want, without even a name attached to their actions, and this is where we see what is really inside of people.
I bet critics are the reason Cave started region locking again, perhaps as a middle finger to western gamers.
I have heard that the reason many Japanese games are region locked is a sort of misplaced sense of nationalism.
in any case, it's a terrific way to shoot yourself in the foot and ensure that the only Japanese games that ever make it to western shores are the crappy ones.
