Can't think of anywhere that sells them over here.

LCD and plasma screens are prohibitively expensive in some countries, though, so CRT TVs aren't obsolete.

...i feel weirdly defensive when somebody from elsewhere criticizes the British way of doing things, but generally not when a Brit does.

    Not sure why that is.

I don't know much about your court system, but in the States that kind of "evidence" probably wouldn't fly in court anyway, unless they could somehow prove that whatever was found must be a TV, which would necessarily require disclosing the technology used.

It reminds me a bit of the red-light camera situation over here. In some states, the tickets are issued not by the police, but by the private contractor that owns and operates the cameras. Obviously a fine charged by a private company for a traffic violation is completely unenforceable, but they rely on people going "oh god I got a ticket I have to pay this" without looking too deeply into it.

(In some jurisdictions, even the tickets issued by the police are considered dubious, since there's a high likelihood the person who ran the red light isn't the registered owner of the vehicle.)

I take it back. The British are awesomeness.

Really the whole red light camera thing is a mess.

There was a class-action lawsuit filed against the City of New York recently, alleging city officials shortened the yellow lights at intersections with cameras below the minimum 3 seconds in an attempt to increase revenue from citations.

@ CA, Lee: i guess it's possible there's something in it, but that wouldn't explain why they kept telling my parents they'd detected a TV when they didn't even have one.  i realize anecdotes aren't going to persuade anyone.

They've pre-emptively issued me with letters trying to sell me a licence every time i've moved into new accomodation, in spite of my not watching live television or owning a TV set, so they obviously do have other, less esoteric means of gathering data about potential customers.

Oh, don't get me wrong, I totally get that it's just a cheap scare tactic. I just kinda found myself wondering if there was even, like, a technological "placebo", so to speak, or if they're just driving around a van with some sandbags in the back to weigh it down. :P

CHECK OUT MY ROAD SIGN SWAG

    image

For some reason it always amused me that the car seems to be towed from behind. Given that you usually see this sign in reference on-street parking, the (probably unintentional) implication is that the idiot not only parked in a no-parking zone, but parked against the left-hand curb of a two-way street.

It was necessary to establish that people who park illegally are idiots.  Otherwise people might think breaking the law was cool. :p
  • I never said Errol Flynn wasn't enjoyable. Lots of people are smug and hammy and entertaining. That's the only reason why Shatner has a career. Or...had a career? I dunno, what has Shatner been up to lately anyways?

I quite liked the film, actually. Watching it was worth the three bucks it cost.

You know what city I've seen more illegal parking in than any other I've been to?

    Parkersburg, West Virginia.

I can't decide if that's ironic or just hilarious.

i love how there's this ominous build while you prepare to confront him, and you get there and he's just sat there at the organ playing sinister music.

idk if that was meant to be funny, but it amused me.

My dad, who is a big pipe organ fan, was watching my sister play OoT and when it got to that part he said, "wow, this really is a great game!"

I had practically never seen him be that enthusiastic for a video game, so I thought it was neat-o.

^^^ My dad said he liked the music from Zelda as well.

Which surprised me, because he generally dislikes video game music a lot, with only a few exceptions (he's said mildly positive things about the music from Sonic Adventure and Rayman 3, that i can recall).

^^ i know the feeling.  Any redundant or unnecessary paragraphs or sentences you can drop?

If not, the obvious, but time consuming, thing to do is to go through it and delete as many unnecessary words as possible.  Do you get any leeway on the word count?

It's only the first draft. It has to be turned in, but it's only the first draft. So I guess I'll let it stay and fix it in the next draft.

It's more that I'm kind of fed up with this thing. This essay. The culmination of a half-semester's work. The thing I spent a lot of hours working on today. And I'm tired and hungry and tomorrow's a long day and I really don't feel like reading my thing for Sociology and

Why am I still watching 101

This show's pretty much a standard cartoon of its era

It looks like one, it's written like one, has the tropes of one

I'd say that Spot's feelings of rejection/self-doubt in "Invasion of the Doggy Snatchers" feels perfectly in character for her (this after being told to essentially stay quiet during a movie, but phrased as "stay calm") but it seems like a plot that every other cartoon back then did, and did it better

Me neither. I think I worked out pretty early on that grown-ups have too much in the way of responsibilities and duties for my taste.

Huh. He's been public domain here for decades.

Most of the original stories are in the public domain in the US, but portions of The Case-Book of Sherlock Holmes are copyrighted by Conan Doyle's estate for another decade.

They claim this means people must pay royalties to use the characters, but Klinger argues that the characters and settings were well-established in the works that are public domain, and as such any adaptation that doesn't explicitly take elements from those last handful of stories should be fair game.
  • imagei will watch the heck outta this pumpkin patch
That seems logical to me.  Holmes is considerably older in the later stories.  The iconic Holmes is based on the earlier adventures.

Also i suppose 'copyrighted for another decade' actually means 'copyrighted forever', as the rights can, i think, be renewed in 2024?  Is that right?

Pretty much. As much as I'd like to think the 2023 expiration is actually going to happen, as long as Mickey Mouse is on the chopping block, the big corporations are going to keep lobbying Congress for endless copyright extensions. >:(

It sickens me to think that, on the off-chance I ever create something popular, greedy people will continue to hoard it long after I'm dead.

Solution: hold onto the rights yourself, and handle all the distribution and marketing and such

But just, like, have the rights pass into either the public domain or your/my estate...
