Re: U.S. Postal Service:
I think I've mentioned before that I despise private carriers like UPS and FedEx, so I would be sad to see USPS go down, and I'm a bit wary of the motives of anyone arguing they should "stop competing" with said private carriers.
That said, I do hope they're able to find some way to turn things around, because it's clear the postal service is a sinking ship. :\
My maternal grandfather was born in Sweden, and lived there until he was six. His family owned a bakery, and baking was the family trade. When Carl Gustav {nicetrygettingmetoslipupandtellyouafamilysurname} (my grandfather) was six, he and his family emigrated to America, where they set up a bakery and kept up the baking stuff. Carl's younger sister, Bibbi (Short for Birgitta), died of typhoid at a depressingly young age;and his older sister Hedvig got sick with what my mom says is Botulism (whatever that is) just before her wedding day and ended up dying a year later while pregnant with her first child. Carl's yongest sibling, Vernal, died a few days after he was born. John, Carl's father, broke his leg and couldn't work for three years. Daryl, Carl's eldest sibling, was basically the one taking care of everybody else and keeping the family together for most of Carl's childhood.
Daryl and Carl avoided the draft by joining the army as cooks so they could get out of having to serve in battle on the front lines. My grandpa never talks about these years; when I ask him, all he says is "Let's talk about happier things. I don't want to remember those miserable times."; and apparently those two sentences are what he has always said whenever anybody asks him about the war. Daryl, on the other hand, wrote four journals of his experiences during the war; and if these journals weren't in Chicago, I could maybe read them. As is, I'd probably have to pay loads of money for the privilege of a half-hour to read those journals; because Daryl's kids and grandkids not only refuse to let my side of the family inherit anything, Daryl's will be danged. Heck, they even want to inherit a good chunk of my grandpa's old stuff when he dies, and want absurd sums of money for compensation for not owning the land that my house is physically on top of, actual ownership of land be danged. Maybe if they'd expressed any nonmonetary interest in their heritage, Daryl might not have left everything to Carl and Carl's kids. Oh well, that's what you get for selling Hedvig's wedding dress to the highest bidder without a concern for all that it meant to your father. Not to mention your own mother's wedding ring.
The USPS delivers all usual mail and technically has a monopoly on letters and cards that aren't "Extremely Urgent", though this is rarely enforced as I understand it (in no small part because it wouldn't help much; package handling and email are the real threats now, though for a time in the 1980s, FedEx was scaring them enough for USPS to introduce Express Mail).
As noted before, package handling is where things change. There's nothing stopping you from using any service you like for parcels or freight, and people use UPS and FedEx for those almost without a second thought, though the USPS's package options aren't nearly as bad as they used to be.

One twin taking the identity of the other twin is a standard plot whenever twins are involved. It's pretty much the only reason why twins are cast as twins.

^ Hmm, that's a good point. For some reason (i.e., my preoccupation with gender) I wanted a scenario that would have people constantly switching between two bodies of different sexes, but perhaps twins isn't the best way to frame that.

I figured gender was playing into this.
You know what would be interesting? Bodyswapping spouses. Bet no one's successfully done that one before.
Gah. I keep coming up with ideas, writing something, then scrapping it. Good thing it's all in Notepad++ or I'd be buried in little balls of paper by now.

See, though, I can't write about spouses because I don't know what being married is like. Siblinghood I've got down... >_>

if someone tries to tell you that uk culture is inherently more sophisticated and wonderful
i just read an article about a new trend that is very popular among london’s youth called “milking”, which involves pouring a gallon of milk on yourself in a public area, and then taking a picture of it.

So I did a silly thing.
Mother let me borrow her 2008 Pontiac to take to the store just now. Since I rarely get to drive that one, I took it for the world's shortest joyride--by which I mean I went two traffic lights further than I needed to and turned around in a Target parking lot.
While I was driving it, I noticed the turn signals were acting funny, so when I got home I decided to check and make sure they were all lighting properly. I did it the same way I always do: hit the flasher button then walk around the car and check that all four of them are lit up.
But then when I went to turn them off...I couldn't. I pressed the button again but they kept on flashing.
So I freaked out and went up to my parents' room to wake up Dad to help me. I was kinda panicky and I said "I hit the flasher buttons in Mom's car and now they won't turn off!" But I inadvertently woke up Mom too, and all she heard was "I hit...in Mom's car!"
So Dad came downstairs and got a coat on right as I got back outside and somehow managed to turn the flashers off. (I still don't know what I did differently.) Result: My parents now have to try to get back to sleep and I made a fool of myself and BRRRGHGV.

Bizarrely, this has had little impact on my good mood. After all, I got a French bread pizza thing and some Diet Dr Pepper :D
