I don't mind silliness, but I'm not real good at being silly, so I just hang here because I like talking to people, so I suppose I appreciate more "serious business" type conversations, since I have a chance to actually participate.

    I can understand that.

This forum did start out being all about silliness, but it's moved away from that; in my eyes, this is not necessarily bad. If people want to have serious discussions here, then they shouldn't be impeded, as long as they can be intelligent and civil about it.

Remember back in the 50s when they'd record like Elvis singing YOU AIN'T NOTHIN BUT A HOUND DOG and then they'd turn the record over and reverse it and it was all NYERP NYERP NYERP NYERP NYERP and people were all like, "That is actually the voice of Satan coming from that song."
Most of the time, I'm relatively serious. But there are times when I let my silliness out (even if it's not very high-quality silliness).

^^This is a good point too.

  • Yeah, what Lumine said

Basically, girls are taught from an early age that beauty is important. A matter of fact, that's a major undercurrent in media. Only the pretty people get to be on TV (unless you're both funny and male). So, girls have more pressure on them to be pretty than usual, which means that they need to learn the lesson faster.

Modern television really sucks at representing its audience in any meaningful way.

I dunno, has it ever even come close?

Compare Leave it to Beaver to the people who watched it.

    Modern television really sucks.
  • False! It has Toonami on it, therefore it cannot suck.

Television's existence is justified as long as Steven Jay Blum is on it, IMO.

  • Just watched Lucy, the Daughter of the Devil.

It reminds me of Home Movies. Like, a lot. Which is a good thing, because Home Movies is my favorite AS original series (except perhaps 12 oz. Mouse)

^^ The way that their voices and guitar harmonise is like out-of-tune gamelan. It's glorious.

I do not mind talking about serious-er subjects, but if we are unable to not take ourselves dead seriously in such cases, I think we are just being boring and pretentious.

I can understand that, but there's a difference between being able to talk about serious subject without taking oneself too seriously and totally dead serious without any sense of humor and you seem to be referring to the second. And there's a difference between talking about something with a sense of humor and just treating the subject with only levity(wrong word, but I can't think of a better one).

Sorry if this doesn't make sense. I'm not very cogent at 1:30 in the morning.

I literally have a phone that literally contains the literal contents of like, literally a billion, yes, BILLION libraries. With literally, like, a search function. Literally. And when I need to know something, in literally a few seconds I literally have billions of pieces of information on literally any given topic. I don't for a second think that people from the 19-20th century would somehow have literally more knowledge than the literal TRILLIONS of TONS (tons, folks. literal TONS) worth of info that I can literally hold in the palm of my hand.

I refer to the revived Cartoon Planet, not the original (which I have seen little of).

I wouldn't be surprised if the revived Toonami has overshadowed it.

Quite true. Though I occasionally see people post with an attitude that could be described as anathematic (not sure of that is a word) towards more serious conversation. And that kind of annoys me, since at the end of the day, I just like talking to people here and sometimes I want to talk to them about serious matters.

Most of the time, I'm relatively serious. But there are times when I let my silliness out (even if it's not very high-quality silliness).

Same here. Actually, I'm much less serious in person than I am on the internet, mostly becuase I'm mildly sarcastic and rely on really dry tones of voice to convey my sarcasm and I can't translate that well into text.

Just "anathema". The -tic is unnecessary for this particular word

Also, I've found the successful delivery of sarcasm is more of the responsibility of the intended audience than it is for you. You shouldn't have to fortify it even with intonation, much less worry about how it's delivered across a written medium. If they understand it, good; if they don't, so much the better.

  • One of the people I used to go to school with has gotten like, insanely religious in the past week or so. He makes Facebook posts constantly about the pow'r of God (always spelled "pow'r" for some reason) and Jesus and glory be and on and on and on. He's made five posts in the past hour, and IT'S TWO IN THE MORNING.

I've had to unsubscribe to him. I consider myself tolerant but sheesh.
