See, I think I only managed to dodge that kind of burnout because I didn't ever engage myself very deeply in the fandom

Like, I would watch the show, and I would spout the memes and I would look at fanart from time to time, but I never really followed any particular artists, and when I did talk about the show it was almost always with people I already knew and liked, rather than a community specifically about ponies

I don't know what point I'm trying to make here; I just find the contrast interesting

Indeed. I came into the Internet Animaniacs fandom right around the time they had settled a rather nasty and upsetting IRC turf war (which, in retrospect, looked a lot like an edge skirmish between mainstream furry fandom and the Burned Furs, since the issues were similar). I couldn't evn ask questions about what happened for a while without getting told it was none of my fucking business. :P Not only that, but there were quite a few broken people, stuff I wasn't accustomed to seeing as a sheltered wannabe Peter Priesthood.

That said, I met a few people that weren't crazy, and mainly hung out with them. It helped that the show ended its run in 1998, a year and a half later. (Of course, then we got the Road Rovers fans, which were even worse...)

Well, one of the concerns was that the people pitching a fit were into "weird" sexual practices, and may have been using sex to curry favor with people, whereas the other side thought the promiscuity was off-putting.

Really, though, the whole thing exploded over a typing quirk. It broke open what had been a solid year or so of resentment.

It actually was pretty Hivebent-ish, except that no one died, of course.
  • Re: EOE: Honestly, Shinji can be excused because, once again, he is basically a pawn in this-granted, the power of godhood has been shoved into his hands, and his first act is consigning everyone to the Tang because he's still conflicted between wanting to be with others and not wanting to be hurt, but reverses it when he realizes that suffering and hurt are necessary for living.

    So, yeah.

Anyways, is it me, or has Tumblr been less active in general recently?
  • it's you.

anyway. Why is there so much damn drama in the Welcome to Night Vale fandom? And why is it all over either what race Cecil is (which kind of strikes me as a pointless question) and shipping (there is a single couple on the show, jesus christ)?

I guess given that this is tumblr, these are stupid questions, but still.
  • Not a hybrid rabbit-skink spirit
    so basically fandoms are stupid

glad we got that obvious fact out of the way
  • Yeah but some fandoms you can understand the controversy even if you don't really get it.

Here, people just seem to kind of be making shit up.

because race and shipping are the things much of tumblr is interested in for anything.

    they're important things in general

this isn't really all that baffling.

race sure but I wouldn't really call shipping important.

anyway, I meant more people sending each other hate over different Cecil headcanons.

that kind of thing is just silly.
  • well relationships are important.  shipping is ehhhhhhhhhhhh.  like I get why others are interested in it but I'm not really, beyond "cute fanart is cute".
  • The sadness will last forever.
    i rarely ship characters

So, this reminds me that I was thinking of fandoms and I think it's interesting that Homestuck and MLP are often regarded as having the worse fandoms, yet both manage to produce fully animated original content complete with voice acting and musical scores.

Putting aside I think it's pretty difficult to judge a nebulous group of people like that as a whole, anyway, it seems a lot of the fandom judging is based on the worse that happens in the fandom without any regard to what the fandom produces.
  • I like fandoms. It makes me happy to see people happy about things.
  • The size of a fandom is directly proportional to the number of terrible people in it.

Honestly, I think that's WHY Homestuck and MLP get so much flack, they're HUGE.

Of course there's going to be a lot of bad apples in the bunch, but a lot of high quality work gets generated as well.
  • And just generally nice people, too. That's pretty important. Almost every Homestuck fan I've met has been a nice person.

    “I'm surprised. Those clothes… but, aren't you…?”
The proportion of cretins in a fandom is a bell curve. With extremely popular or obscure things, it is easy to ignore or ostracise individuals that behave badly; with niche-appeal media that still manage to have huge fanbases, it is difficult to either exile the outliers or pretend that they don't exist.

MLP: FIM has fallen hard on this because it has an overlap not only with the furry fandom (which is often volatile), but also has a certain chip-on-the-shoulder quality for some people. Homestuck isn't quite so bad, but it is still a wildly popular niche phenomenon, it does toe the line of things like video game and web comic culture, which... there be dragons.

I think when people refer to "bad fandoms" they're talking more about general conduct than quality of fanwork.

I find it fairly unlikely that these people are making an informed decision about the "general conduct" unless they're somehow researching behavior across multiple web-communities. I can almost grantee they're making observations based upon incidents within communities they actually attend and not exactly paying any attention when the fandoms are behaving themselves.

Very much so. I am a gormless, spacey, superstitious, neurotic romantic posing as someone skeptical, sensible and level-headed. It is a bit sad sometimes. But, y'know, having a place on the Internet where I can make jokes about being a ferret in love with a cat and no-one bats an eye is relaxing.

    ^^ ...intestine?
  • That was all Nitya.  He's probably referencing something in particular.  Maybe Abu Sakkar, though that wasn't accidental at all.
  • “I'm surprised. Those clothes… but, aren't you…?”
I understand, and I get that it means something, but I am missing the necessary point of reference. It makes sense, but not complete sense. Nitya and Odradek can be similar in that way. I sometimes feel... uneducated around them. Which I actually appreciate, in a strange way: I know many things and find it exciting to learn new ones.

    Good comic? Good comic.

Inaccurate, however. There were far too many people who considered Hannibal a good person.
  • Perhaps reading a pornographic pony blog based on a children's cartoon is also a warning sign, hmm.

    This.

Honestly, when you decide it's time to defend the depiction of actions of a fictional serial killer against that of a fictional, fan-based, potential rapist, it's time to take a long look and the mirror and ponder what brought you to this point.

Both Hannibal and Molestia are outside my circle of interests, so I don't really care one way or another, but I can't help but feel both comics are cherry picking evidence and arguments to support what's being argued.

For starters, people DO get murdered and there are family members and friends who have to move on but somehow these arguments seem to think that's excusable because the direct victim is dead? I never understood this line of reasoning, and it seem the "humor derived from murder is OK" camp tend to just avoid having to address family members and friends in this situation.

Second of all, one can't help looking better by picking an adult targeted item that derives humor from dark sources and compare it to a fan-based alteration of a children's cartoon show. A more apt comparison would be trying to compare "Ask Pinkamena Diane Pie" or some less rapey, but no less murder heavy MLP fan work where the main character is clearly a dark, disturbed individual. I'm kinda doubting the comic would work as well if it's comparing TWO fan-based, cartoon horses that are dealing with dark situations.

Thirdly, if we take the last panel of comic one:

    image

And compare it to the last panel of comic two:

    image

Doesn't seem our author avatar is being quite "playful" & "silly" with that decapitated head?

Also, maybe if Molestia was new, I'd feel this movement would actually accomplish it's goals. But if anything, it's probably rallying a bunch of people around a meme most of them where done with already while preaching to the choir.

I'm not saying there's no such thing as "rape culture" or media that perpetuates it, but I can't help but feel the energy around this would be better directed elsewhere.
