y'know with hindsight it really isn't surprising i liked lonelygirl15 when i was a teenager, even though i don't think i recognized why at the time

i always used to envy people who could point to a fictional character and go "that's literally me"

Bree Avery wasn't "literally me" but she was

• a teen science geek
• who mostly lived in her bedroom
• who lived somewhere kind of remote and so didn't get out much
  
• who had few friends, all of them close
• who had been bullied at school
• who spent a lot of time on the internet
• and who played with stuffed animals well into her teens

looking back i don't think i ever found a more relatable character

my dad hates "relatable", as used by teens with reference to fictional characters.

He thinks the word should be "sympathetic", and that "relatable" means "able to be told", the way a story is relatable.

He complains that people are misled by the colloquial use of "sympathetic" to mean that you feel sorry for them, when the technical meaning is more general than that.

i think sympathetic characters and relatable characters are different, though.  A sympathetic character isn't usually someone you point to and go, "that is so me!", a character can be sympathetic because you understand and empathize with them even though you've never been in a situation like theirs in your life.

actually idk how far i actually envied people who could relate to characters

more like i envied the presumed demographic that could relate to the main character of every kid's drama, they were all the same character

ALWAYS wanted "the popular kids" to like them.  ALWAYS had some stupid awkward crush that wouldn't be reciprocated until *maybe* the finale if they were lucky.
