I guess that's part of the point. It can be almost impossible to escape your own delusions and desires, but other people can bring out the best in you and help you gain the strength to break out of the unhealthy mental ruts you put yourself in.
Dipper's argument, that the problems of life can be dealt with, that the future is terrifying and uncertain but that we can do it together, that life is worth living, that reality can be worth living in, that we must fight for our very selves to deal with reality, is amazingly empowering.

So I rewatched the finale (because I remembered it had a giant robot fight in it) and man, somehow Stan losing his memories was super effective even knowing he'd get them back like five minutes later. The whole thing was really emotional actually, even though I hadn't seen the rest of the show in ages.

I'd seen some people say that it felt like he got his memories back too easily, but...I dunno, it worked out for me.
If Stan had lost his memories forever, it would have been his family who suffered, not him. And you could argue that Ford deserved a tragic ending, but Dipper and Mabel and Soos certainly didn't.

Some kind of ARG that's going on, I guess. I haven't looked into the details.
