    Just listened to it myself.

I know that song, but I can't remember the name of it for anything.

Just listened to it. I won't spoil the surprise, but I think I know what squid's hinting at.

Why do we tend to imagine "cavemen" as being unintelligent people with a tendency to use brute force to solve every problem?

According to non-nineteenth-century archaeological findings, the stone tools that the "cavemen" used were actually quite precise and efficient.  Nineteenth-century archaeologists inferred that the rocks that "cavemen" used to cut trees would be slow, unwieldy, and inefficient, but with the right form, hold, and stroke, a precise but deep cut can be easily made.
  • Because pop culture is not very historically accurate.

I actually like to imagine stone age people as some of the smartest. Simply because, taken from a certain perspective, they invented smart.

Also, why do we imagine them wearing poorly-cut loincloths of animal skins?

These are people who lived just after the most recent Ice Age, these are people who know how to make a warm garment out of animal fur.  There is clear evidence that they made those furry skin-garments to be well-fitting and comfortable.

For gosh sakes, Otzi the iceman had a pouch and pockets!

@ Super Lazuli:  Exactly.  I mean, could any of us have invented language, fire, tools, or civilization?

From Facepalm Studios:  India 2, Clement Attlee's revenge!

Nehru:  Gee, it sure is boring around here.

Mohandas Karamchand "Mahatma" Gandhi: Mah boi, this peace is what all true warriors strive for.

Nehru: I just wonder what Churchill is up to.

Grammar Nazi:  No!  You wonder to what Churchill is up!

Grammar Fuhrer:  No! To what up Churchill is, you wonder!

Grammar Yoda:  No!   Wonder to what Churchill is, up you do.

Winston Leonard Spencer Churchill:  This is the sort of errant pedantry up with which I shall not put.

S.C. Bose:  Your majesty!  Jinnah and his minions have claimed the isle of Pakistan!

Mohandas Karamchand "Mahatma" Gandhi:  How can we help?

S.C. Bose: It is written:  Only Nehru can defeat Jinnah.

Nehru:  Great!  I'll go grab my international influence and political savvy!

S.C. Bose:  There is no time.  Your sword is enough.

    S.C. Bose:  Squadalah, we're off!

Nehru: What are all those boats?

S.C. Bose:  Those are the navies of England.  You must conquer all.

Personally I think Kids Next Door had it right, if you must use a roadsign as a weapon, it should be a Yield sign.
Funny, Aondeug and I once talked about the merits of yield signs vs. stop signs as weapons. We concluded that a stop sign is more intimidating because it is red (red, of course, being the color of blood) and the message "STOP" is more aggressive and demanding than "YIELD" or "GIVE WAY".

Hmm, would a "Dead End" sign have the best of both worlds?

  • [DEAD END] signs seem to have mostly been replaced by [NO OUTLET] signs though. The latter is far less intimidating.

Also street signage related, a few blocks from my house, there is a street sign that is entirely hand made. Someone took a piece of scrap metal, hammered it out, halfheartedly painted it green, and took some paint and sloppily wrote MAPLE STREET on it.

I'm pretty sure there used to be a [DEAD END] sign just down the street from my house. I haven't seen it in ages, though.
  • There are some weird signs around here.

My favorite is [SLOW DIP AHEAD], leading to jokes that they shouldn't talk about people that way.

We talkin' Atlantis, Halo, or Stargate (or something else entirely) here?

Lazuli: Heh. Though I don't think I've ever seen one of those. There are several road signs that I don't think I've ever seen in person.

Anyhow, I think I'll head to bed. Good night.

    Good night Gator.

I think "NO OUTLET" vs. "DEAD END" is a regional thing now--both are still considered standard, so which one you see more often depends entirely on which jurisdiction is posting the signs. (There's also a slight semantic difference in that all dead ends are no-outlet situations, but not all no-outlet situations are dead ends, but in practice this usually doesn't matter.)
Also street signage related, a few blocks from my house, there is a street sign that is entirely hand made. Someone took a piece of scrap metal, hammered it out, halfheartedly painted it green, and took some paint and sloppily wrote MAPLE STREET on it.
Interesting. Did it replace an "official" sign that was damaged or stolen or something?

  • Touch the cow. Do it now.
Aliens made $131 million at the box office, so yeah, it could've built the White House.
  • Well, there is certainly sophisticated technology from that time period (see: The Antikythera Mechanism), but it's not more advanced than what we have today.

Interesting. Did it replace an "official" sign that was damaged or stolen or something?

I doubt it. More likely is that one of the illegally-built dirt roads back there got paved over by accident and someone felt it now warranted having a name.

...How much did it cost to build the White House, anyway?
