I feel no inherent reason to "git gud" at any game. I'm not here to frustrate myself; I'm here to give myself a pleasant and/or otherwise meaningful (by my own tastes) experience. If it's difficult but meaningful, I might really enjoy it. The prodigiously difficult bosses of the Ys series come to mind. And I appreciated that Zoe kicked my ass in Monster Hunter. If it's easy but not meaningful, I might feel it's just grindy and not enjoy it anyway. Oozi's Earth Adventure is an example of this latter case.
I think I brought up cheating before at some point so I'll throw the following commentary in. If I care so much, I'm fine with cheating, though I rarely cheat because I rarely have a reason to cheat since I'm often not invested enough in a game to bother to do so anyway and it also feels dirty. I use savestates sometimes, but mainly as a portable save-anywhere tool, and I generally try to avoid using them even on things like difficult bosses unless I just feel like something's being totally unfair and trial-and-error.
But I'm perfectly fine with other people cheating, so long as it's not a multiplayer feature (e.g. PVP play, or scoreboards).
On the other hand, if I'm really emotionally invested in a game, or really like the gameplay, I may intentionally want to play it at a higher difficulty level. Just because I'm okay with cheating doesn't mean that I don't like challenge. But that challenge just has to have a greater meaning than being able to operate the interface of an electronic diversion more skillfully. If I really find it fun to fight the bosses, or if I really feel the player-character's struggle against them, I might be particularly interested in doing a boss-rush or even a replay at a higher difficulty level.
(And of course I won't ever cheat these because this is all single-player and using a cheat would (1) defeat the point, and (2) be horribly un-immersive.)
I still think the real Vriska of Undertale is Alphys, between wanting to insert herself as the hero in the story and also being technically responsible for everything that happened. I can't really blame her for it though.
As for your question, it's not really the same dynamic at all--she might find him annoying sometimes, but Undyne cares a lot more about Papyrus' feelings than Vriska ever did. Or in terms of the individual characters, Undyne has some superficial similarities to Vriska but she's also a lot more genuine about it. And I think Papyrus' self confidence and exuberance aren't fake either, even if he doesn't think he has any friends before the kid shows up (Sans and Undyne don't count? Rude!)
Oh, yeah, the relationship is definitely much healthier with the Undertale pair than the Homestuck pair.
I meant that the latter two are distillations of the former two, to fit Undertale's more hopeful mood. Pap has Tavros's general silliness and obsession with his own confidence, but backs it up with real heart and courage rather than Tav's simpering compliance with anyone stronger than him, and Undyne's Vriska's blood-knight attitude and raging superiority complex, but instead of fighting for a shallow idea of what she should be, she fights for friends and a dream that she truly believes in.
While Alphys definitely resembles Vriska in the sense that you mentioned, I actually think she resembles Karkat in a sense. Openly interested in nerdy interests, poor socialization skills (in different ways), constant guilt over past mistakes, etc, etc. Mind you, I wouldn't go as far as to compare her to homestuck under regular circumstances (though Metattron does remind me a bit of eridan for some reason)
I've been playing Red Orchestra 2. It's weird, that game is really pretty popular nowadays. I guess PC gamers went from obsessing about the military superficially to obsessing about the military in a more thorough sense.
Helps that Red Orchestra 2 is a really good game for a lot of reasons.
So, Afterbirth is coming out in 1.5 days and I'm hype.
I also finished watching the two extreme routes for Undertale today. Well worth the time investment, and I'm definitely looking forward to more from Toby.
A game called Duelyst recently went free-to-play (I'm not sure on what it was doing beforehand) and it's pretty fun, and seems to be light on the wallet.
It's an odd combination of a TCG and a turn-based strategy games. It kinda reminds me of Magic Tactics but it's like, actually good.
The art style is a little bland (pretty typical indiepixel fare) and the sound design is atrocious, but otherwise it's quite enjoyable.
If anyone here ends up playing, my account name is planetJane.
Anyone use some mods from moddingofisaac like MissingHUD2, or whatever that mod is that clearly shows your items? I'm thinking of downloading the former because the item sheet in BoI: R is dumb, and I could do with a cleaner experience. Any good experiences?
The new voice dude for Afterbirth is especially good, except I can't stand his inclusion categorically, and am looking forward to the mod that removes the voices.
I know I'm playing on servers with 64 people at a time, but I really wish I could play Red Orchestra 2 late at night and not have to deal with neo-nazis.
me: bad news, the neonazi joined our server again, but good news, everyone ragged on him me: when he started dumping slurs: "so edgy" "I remember being in middle school too" me: it's weird, the game is """politically sensitive""" in the sense that neonazis like the nazis, but at the asme time almost everyone else is mature and not-fucking-horrible enough to dump on them me: there's also a history nerd that public-voice-chats "fuck you, nazi" every time he gets a kill me: he's okay
hey, we could do games around here. maybe those hours spent trying to teach people Megamek won't have gone to waste, lol.
I probably will have trouble finding mechs that I like, though. It's another game focusing on early-era stuff, which means every 'mech is a Big Metal Guy instead of the cool clan-era stuff.
So. Afterbirth might actually be set up to download content as certain criteria is met. Which is so far outside good programming practice that I don't even know what to say.
People have been complaining about Afterbirth's programming for reasons that I don't particularly care about, and have extrapolated from that to demonizing the guy behind BoI
I did the music for a short dungeon crawler that I should receive the finished build of today. I'll ask the dev if I can host it on Dropcanvas or something similar so any interested parties can play it if they'd like.

She's the best boss in Monster Tale.
She's also got epic music.
There's a reason her Treehouse Grotto area has pretty epic music, and the battle against her has epic music as well.
And you are on your toes during the entire fight. And she will kick your ass before you kick hers.
Same with Ethan.
Deanu is also pretty tough and cool but doesn't have as epic music.
Priscilla I remember being a pushover though.

Eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee, this game looks so so good.
The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky SC (a.k.a. "second chapter") just released GOG and Steam, current price $29.99
Play the first before the second, if you're new to the series. They're one story, just split into two games because it was too big for one.
