I think it's hard to be a transgirl in this world and not be angry and hate people and things, because life unfortunately becomes like a game where you have to prove you deserve to be a woman and you're always under attack and the deck is stacked against you. Even the luckier ones with smooth transitions find themselves under attack at times. I understand where all this hate comes from. I sometimes experience this hate myself, but I think that hate just makes things worse. I try to just love the people who are close to me and not get consumed by hate, so I can get through this life with less pain and more happiness. But it's really, really, really hard to be a transgirl.

being angry is fine, but translating that anger into calling to murder entire demographics, not so much. is all. I mean you know that

especially like "cafabs". that means " coercively assigned female at birth". they're saying like, hey, you were coerced into this identity you have. anyway, kill yourself

I get the impression people who say things like that are taking their anger out on random people on tumblr because they don't know any way to use their anger more constructively

Not that that makes it ok, of course

It also seems to stem from that ignorance a lot of Tumblr users have of the fact that words can actually have consequences
  • Sometimes tumblr really is just people venting out their feelings, and sometimes those feelings aren't something other people want to read, but that is something of a consequence of structures that twist human beings as though they were clay.

Yes, that's the thing. People who say things like that are very hurt and I think their attempts to hurt others are probably ineffective most of the time. It makes me sad that people who are victims of hate become hateful. It's a bad cycle.

See, this is the bit that worries me. It's one thing when it's a grown-ass man like Luka Grindstaff who's on the receiving end of the "kill yourself for being afab" shit, but a lot of times these people are targeting younger, less emotionally stable people with this nonsense, and that doesn't sit well with me.

coercing a suicide should be treated as manslaughter at minimum :P
  • More people have said that and been killed than there are thorium decay products.
It's incredibly lazy to blame someone for someone else's decision to take their own life, instead of actually addressing about what horrible circumstances led to this action. But society would rather blame one of their own than admit they're doing something wrong.

I agree for the most part, but consider the borderline case of someone who's contemplating suicide but only goes through with it after the final straw of someone saying "You're worthless and should kill yourself."

I think that person deserves to face some kind of consequence in that case.
  • More people have said that and been killed than there are thorium decay products.
I don't believe in people deserving things.

...I can respect that answer, oddly enough.
  • kill living beings
you could punish them on the basis that if they're going to tell someone to kill themselves based on their gender, they're probably going to do it again, so making them stop minimizes death

if nobody deserves anything the they don't deserve not to be stopped

I dunno, I mean, realistically, it's pretty unlikely that anyone's gonna off themselves just because some jackass on Tumblr told them to.

But I don't like to say "it's just words on the Internet, it doesn't matter", because that's exactly the attitude people like this want you to take, because it justified their further abuse.

I mean, I think we can all agree that telling people to kill themselves isn't acceptable under any circumstances, regardless of whether or not it actually has an effect...
  • Let's just go with "death threats correlate with suicide, and there's sufficient evidence for causation, so we should block death threats until evidence to the contrary arises"
  • My dreams exceed my real life

    unrelated post I liked

I was going to reblog but my phone makes things hard
  • that is an A+ post
  • I understand what the author is getting at, but I still don't entirely know who is doing this stuff in the first place.

I only ever see people complaining about SJWs running so-and-so off of tumblr secondhand.

I suppose my own deliberate insulation is at fault there. Maybe it's even a good thing, I dunno.
  • THIS MACHINE KILLS FASCISTS
One of the reblogs nailed it: Tumblr is so obsessed with perfection that they not only ignore the good, the actively trash it for not being perfect.
  • Okay I've tried to avoid talking about this kind of thing but like today I found someone who identifies as over twenty different animals, things, and fictional characters.

    I would like a link.

Is it just me, or is there a disturbing number of people on Tumblr who take the fairly reasonable premise "it's ok to be a person living with mental illness" and extend it to the, uh, less reasonable "it's ok to be a person with mental illness and so you shouldn't ever seek formalized treatment of any kind"?
  • If by disturbing you mean a small but ocasionally very vocal minority, no, it's not just you.

I've seen that every now and again.
  • Man is a most complex simple creature: see what he weaves, and how base his reasons for doing so.
I have never seen these people.

    I believe you, though.
  • THIS MACHINE KILLS FASCISTS
I haven't seen it on tumblr, but years ago on IRC, I ran into a lot of people that were like "psychiatrists and counselors are all quacks, medicine is poison and mental illness is personality and creative potential, dammit!" So it's an attitude that's been around a while.
  • ^ I've seen that, but I think what Centie's talking about is something distinct. Like people who act like if you're against self-diagnosis than you're classist and ableist and everything. (That was an actual post, reblogged by a person I'm no longer following--I don't think I've seen that stuff on my dash again, but I'm sure it's out there.)

Them specifically, yes, and also a category of people who say that because the history of psychology as a field is, uh, politically incorrect, that somehow invalidates modern clinical psychology.

Which is especially odd, as most fields of study were historically more racist, sexist, etc. than they are today.
  • THIS MACHINE KILLS FASCISTS
Quite a few people that say that have connections to anti-psychiatry, which has its roots both in Scientology (which essentially considers seeing anyone but their high-priced therapists a sin) and the Human Potential Movement ("don't think, feeeel").
  • Man is a most complex simple creature: see what he weaves, and how base his reasons for doing so.
That's a Bruce Lee quote, which the fullness of it incorporates both Daoist ("don't think, feel") and Buddhist thought ("It is like a finger pointing away to the moon.")

I'm pretty sure the Human Potential Movement are neither of those, so I'm going to be annoyed now.

    THIS MACHINE KILLS FASCISTS
You're right to be annoyed; the HPM types loved misinterpreting Eastern religion to further whatever their own goals were. The New Age movement liked to do the same with Native American lore.
  • Whenever I see the fictives, people with a ton of kintypes, and such I wonder how many of them are serious and how many are satire/social experiments/trolls mocking the idea of "fictives" and "otherkin".

Because of these two statements, everyone's making feudal lord/handmaid jokes and it's the best thing that's happened ever in a while.
  • Now I'm thinking of a Type-Moon game with Korra as a Servant

It's an extreme reaction to society's current stigma against mental illness.

Which is understandable but just as bad, and if you ask me it reinforces many of the things the opposite side does too.

  • steven universe has a massive amount of queer subtext, potential polyamory everywhere, loads of canon nonbinary characters, and even sort of representation for people who are plural or part of a system.
So many posts that are almost good before running straight into "imaginary friend crap is exactly as legitimate as lgbtq rights".

I saw someone I unfollowed but still check on sometimes make a post saying "I might be fictive for [a character]" and just glancing at their about me they gone slightly further down that rabbit hole, but not enough so that I can certainly say they're trolling, or even that Poe's Law applies.

Unfortunately, some people with otherwise good opinions really do sincerely believe stupid shit, and fold that shit into their understanding of social justice.
  • also as an imaginary friend i resent the comparison to lgbt people

well, i did say relatedly, so one can logically assume that this is in response to the most recent post that is not my own, which is haven's post in which stephen universe is mentioned
  • not that i have anything against it mind but jesus fuck it's all over the place like BOOM
  • there were actual lesbians on a TV show, tends to have that effect.
  • but anyways

the hate for fictive people and otherkin people kinda confuses me because it seems so arbitrary

like, we all interact with people who believe other things that seem blatantly, wildly not true and make them do/support dubious things on a daily basis but it's generally considered poor form to go openly side-eyeing them and shit

idk maybe i just dont get it

I'm cool with otherkin/fictives/etc. in general

It only really frustrates me when you get the people on Tumblr who say it's literally equivalent to being part of an oppressed group like queer people

It's mostly young naive people who say that, and I don't think they realize WHY that's so offensive, but even so
