Wouldn't baking soda produce NaCl when it enters the stomach?
  • THIS MACHINE KILLS FASCISTS
Byakuren: Yup...and at least here in the States, they have baking soda labelled as both a food and a drug for that reason (you can use it as an antacid, though it's high in sodium and tastes awful).

I don't think of myself as a slob, and I do eat entire medium and large pizzas myself...though not in a short sitting, of course.

Usually, it acts as a combined meal and snack -- meal when I'm hungry at first, then snack as I'm working and want something to much on, immediately after the meal, for the next several hours.  Provided I don't fall asleep in the meantime of course.

You're thinking of software engineers. Computer scientists are glorified combinatorialists.

being a computer scientist is like being a glorified electrician, in the same way that being an economist is like being a high-level psychologist or being a biologist is like being a very advanced physicist

if you look far enough down the rabbit hole, the latter's field is the root of the former, but things so far down the rabbit hole are rarely relevant
  • mathematics is structured philosophy
    philosophy is specialized psychology
    psychology is advanced biology
    biology is specialized chemistry
    chemistry is highly advanced physics
  • Darn. I've been waiting for an opportunity to use that particular Amusing Misspelling, you see.
  • edited 2014-05-06 16:28:23
    this is because

math (mathematics) is structured understanding (philosophy)
understanding (philosophy) is specialized mental processes (psychology)
mental processes (psychology) are advanced functions of certain living organisms (biology)
living organisms (biology) are specialized systems of chemical reactions (chemistry)
chemical reactions (chemistry) are manifestations of the laws of physics (physics)

IT ALL BOILS DOWN TO PHYSICS

IT ALWAYS BOILS DOWN TO PHYSICS

    FIRST PRINCIPLES, BABY~

  • at least this bit about things that are better than reading the book is good i have not finished the whole review yet
  • God damn, Space Jam is a clusterfuck of a movie. I liked it as a kid too, before I really learned the difference between good and bad. The Looney Tunes not being funny! Token female bunny with no personality! Michael Jordan trying to act! Bill Murray clearly not giving a shit! Wayne Knight there for some reason! A magic basketball that steals NBA stars' talent sure why not! An Epic Movie-esque Pulp Fiction reference for no Goddamn reason! "I Believe I Can Fly" came from THIS movie?! And why in God's name would the Looney Tunes need Michael Jordan anyway? And why are all the Looney Tunes, including the villainous ones, on the same team? Wouldn't, say, Yosemite Sam want to work WITH the aliens to finally take care of that razzin' frazzin' long-eared galoot? And WHY IS LOONEY TUNES LAND UNDERGROUND?! Perhaps most egregiously, does anyone remember the Siskel & Ebert review? They LOVED it. They were both momentarily too blinded by their Chicago Michael Jordan worship to recognize a turd as a turd. Will fellow Chicagoan Nathan Rabin fare better?

there was a time when people thought Space Jam wasn't garbage?

i mean it entertained me as a kid and the premise is amusingly absurd, but it was always cheesy and flimsy and nonsensical

I always wondered how something like Space Jam could've been good in the first place

  • Space Jam is funny to think about and has some amusing moments of WTF-ery but it's not what I'd call a good movie.

    zSilly Mode: ON.

Well of course Japan is filled with jerks. It has coastlines. Oceans have a jerkifying effect on people.

This is why Botswana is the best nation. Botswana Botswana Botswaaaaaaana. And transnithia. Boleeeevia. You must Boleevia. Zimbabababababway Botswaaaaaaaaaana!

    Silly mode: OFF.

I know too little of Japan to comment, but I doubt Crichton's xenophobia was ever good in any way. Yeah, that's a deal breaker. Shame, because when Chrichton isn't being awful and almony, he can be very good as an author. Still, there are authors that are consistently good. Also, there ate authors who don't write xenophobic stuff-that-is-no-good-and-which-is-in-fact-harmfu

Crichton doesn't believe in climate change, no.

He's best known for being the guy who wrote Jurassic Park, though.
