It's because "an ask" is a term of art, it's the name for the particular type of message. Therefore, "sending an ask" instead of "asking" encodes a few different things, the most practical effect of which is that, when you tell someone else "I sent them an ask about it" you're communicating that they may expect to have access to the answer directly without having to have it communicated to them specifically by the asker or the askee (since asks can be answered publicly). "I asked them about it", by contrast, suggests that either you or the person you asked will have to tell the person you're speaking to the answer. (It also suggests that you already have their answer, since unless stated otherwise "I asked" suggests a real-time communication, while "sent them an ask" implies that you're still waiting.)
Also, "an ask" does not necessarily have to be a question; you could send someone an ask letting them know something (which you would likely do if you want to communicate through tumblr and aren't following them), which would be pretty unintuitive to phrase as "I asked". (Compare "I asked him about some books to check out" vs. "I sent him an ask about some books to check out", for instance.)
I don't know why I put so much thought into that, except I'm procrastinating on stuff again. Kind of a nice feeling, both having goals I've set for myself and the free time to not only accomplish them but delay accomplishing them.
