So I'm currently playing a hell of a lot of Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup, just because I've found it to be in general the roguelike that is the most "fair" and least likely to kill you with cheapshots.

I'm not terribly good at it, and I think that might be in part my stubborn refusal to go with any of the good combinations and instead just play what I like. So I haven't made a Minotaur Berserker, despite it being the easiest class combo for new people. Rather I tend to play something like a Demonspawn Monk, or a Merfolk Skald, or a Draconian Wizard (though this one is actually quite the good character). I also tend to be rather impatient, which is a death sentence for roguelikes.

Regardless, I'm going to keep on trying. And indeed, some of my runs aren't half bad. I have managed to get two of my characters into the lair so far, so that's not bad.
Man, that basically sums up why I can't get anywhere in that game.

awwww yussssss Double Dealing Character extra stage clear *get!* :3 That might be the quickest one I've ever done. :) Admittedly, I exploited Marisa's uncursed bomb, but it's not cheating!
  • Sometimes, I hear someone complain that something's wrong. And then I check, and I realize that everything's working exactly how it should, and that somehow makes it much, much worse.

Well, I guess sleeping wrong wasn't all bad. It meant I was able to get up in time to make a phone call I've been needing to take care of, instead of having to call at some odd hour and leave a message, so that's nice.

57/66 scenes to unlock Shoot the Bullet's extra level. This game has only one difficulty, and it is for lunatics. :o
  • even the ones without only one difficulty level are for lunatics

The normal mode is easier than the arcade standard in general, akin more to the "moderate" difficulties that console ports of older shmups would have, but like those ports, it also has an option for arcade (hard) difficulty. Normal mode looks intimidating but if you learn the basic strategies and practice a little then it is not so bad at all. Lunatic mode is... something else entirely. Xp It is basically the nigh-impossible arcade "second loop."

lol I'm gonna join this forum just so I can vote in this poll. ^_^ I feel that this is an accurate representation of shmup fans, funny but true.
  • didn't this exact controversy occur with that Avicii guy a year or two ago.

still not as bad as the Paradox forums.

a few days ago someone was really, really angry that some of the Roman Emperors are depicted with beards in the history files in CK2 (which you will never see unless you go out of your way to do so) and demanded Paradox change it.

but adding Judaism to the game is "unfeasible".

I don't disagree with the poll or anything and I like the shmup fandom and the Touhou fandom as well even though there is a joke in the shmup genre that Touhou and its fans are a rabid scourge.

Same. That poll/pecking order chart is ridiculous, though, especially since Touhou is kind of unusual where shmups are concerned. Unless I'm not seeing a joke.

Ah, yes, I understand. How far have you gotten an Octopode Ice Elementalist?
  • Not a hybrid rabbit-skink spirit
Anywho, because I'm bored, I'm going to make a Crawl character named after the next poster, it should be fun
  • 3rd and 6th high scores are of said race/class. They both got to Dungeon Lvl 8 before being summarily executed.

My 2nd and 1st high scores, incidentally, are both Minotaur Berserkers.

Oh shit I've never played a healer before

Do you want me to stay with Elyvilon or am I allowed to switch between the 3 "good" gods

Alright, I did a few trial runs to figure out how a Healer works, but I think I've got it now. Yarrun XIX the Merfolk Healer is starting his quest.

Currently haven't been pacifying too many monsters, mainly been keeping up piety by sacrificing weapons.

It is probably somewhat facetious, as I think shmuppers tend to take a light-hearted, self-mocking approach to their hardcore hobby. However, there is definitely some truth to saying that arcade super-players are the most respected in the fanbase, and also that players tend to graduate from credit-feeders (novices) to survivalists (intermediates like me) to high scorers (veterans). Shmup fans like and respect an impressive show. :) Also, mainstream reviewers notoriously do not seem to "get" this genre so they apply the standards of a cinematic FPS or RPG or something and judge shmups harshly without really appreciating the good things they offer (i.e. Raiden III being dismissed by the gaming press as an outdated piece of junk, despite being part of a legendary series and highly-regarded by fans). Lastly, yes, I am pretty sure that the Touhou thing is a joke. ^_^ Touhou games have a good level of respect, even though they are decidedly something... a little different. I feel certain enough that many new shmuppers were (like myself) attracted to the genre by Touhou!

Also, this character lucked out and almost immediately got a spear of piercing so that's a huge perk

Good points, I pretty much agree. Given how hardcore gamers can be I wasn't too sure how seriously I should take it, hence the second-guessing.

Meanwhile, in the grand strategy fandom.
  • seriously grand strategy gamers and Paradox fans in particular are the weirdest mix of the social justice warrior "this minor thing is INCREDIBLY OFFENSIVE" mentality, good old fashioned nationalism and bigotry, and complete hatred of anyone who doesn't use the same mods as them.

Yeesh. What courses? I'm curious too, aside from the link just posted. I see nothing wrong with going into detail — unless you act like a jerk about it — about why something is incorrect.

just read the thing I linked on the bottom of the last page. That's actually by far one of the most tame examples I've seen.

also, the nonsensical mental gymnastics people do to justify Judaism not being a religion in CK2.
