Victorian translators of Faust were very... Victorian. They liked using Shakespearean English when they were translating a play that was less than sixty years old, for reasons that escape me.
Also I second the recommendation of Kaufmann's translation of Goethe. Highly readable, and this is coming from someone who usually doesn't get into poetry.
i had parts of it spoiled for me a while ago, but somehow managed to forget everything of significance by the time i actually watched it, i guess because i wasn't sufficiently interested at the time to retain those memories. i can't even remember what was 'spoiled'.
I've learned to tolerate drama...except on the boat
Hulu is legal (it's owned by a consortium of NBCUniversal/Comcast, News Corporation, Providence Equity Partners, and ABC/Disney), but it's only available within the U.S.
The first Drama CD of Puella Magi Madoka Magica reveals that the reason that Madoka became a Puella Magi was to save a cat from being run over by a car. She admits that she is a text book example of someone who became a magical girl on a whim without thinking about it. Her wish was born from the kindness toward a cat. Truth be told, no fan (as I know) saw this one coming, yet at the same time it is not surprising considering this is Madoka we are talking about.
Note that it is also very likely that she made the same wish in Timelines 2 and 3, though this is not confirmed.
Yeah, I mentioned before that the relationship between Homura and Madoka is basically a very conscious mirror of Faust's relationship with Margaret (and later Helen of Troy) in Goethe's interpretation of the tale. Sure, the romantic element is mostly subtextual, but it is about as blatant as possible short of actually stating it outright.
That scene is all but a beat-for-beat recreation of the final scene in Part Two of Faust, in which Gretchen and the Virgin Mary sweep Faust up from Hell and bear him to eternal glory.
If that isn't the mother of all homoerotic subtext moments, I don't know what is.
It's also an extremely well known scene in the yuri fandom, due to this. (Contains the aforementioned Madoka scene as a comparison, so spoilers.) Not to mention the ribbon thing, which is probably a reference to Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha, considering they were both Shinbo works. And Nanoha was hardly light on the subtext either.
Bumping this thread to show Miko that we already had a thread for this show, and also because I am currently rewatching it in preparation for watching Rebellion.

And I will be liveblogging it Here
I was really excited about this, but it now feels like a very bad idea. But I've already committed to it, so my feelings on the matter don't matter.
Also, if anybody knows a good site to watch it on, I'd be glad to hear of it.
