Philip Morris snapped up Nabisco right after they split off R.J. Reynolds into its own company (they didn't want to deal with the consequences of selling poison to the masses).
Also, is the phenomenon of large corporations trying to come off as warm and fuzzy a product of the last decade? I'm thinking of Procter & Gamble's "Proud sponsor of Moms" slogan...

The two biggest things that I remember everyone getting bothered over was Philip Morris selling stuff like baby food and the sport of stock car racing was under a trophy branded by a cigarette (during this time there was even a shitty NASCAR saturday morning cartoon.)
So it kind of makes sense why they're gravitating towards nonsensical names that can't be tied to anything.
