So, I've learned that, out of the five lowest-rated mythics on Gatherer, four of them are from the last couple of non-core sets. Is that bias towards cards that get more attention or what?
It's an Elf Shaman with more toughness than most Mythic Rares (including the Theros gods and most of the Phyrexian Praetors) and more power than old Niv-Mizzet.
And it's still underpowered for being 7 mana in two colors.
It's most effective against red (protection from direct damage and 'all creatures take 1 damage', plus enough toughness to take a lightning axe to the face), even though a Selesnya legendary should logically be most effective against black.
It does nothing to protect token engines from things more likely to screw them over (aka Wrath).
It does nothing to protect the card itself from the things most likely to screw it over (aka black killspells or white oblivion).
And on top of all of that, the character's supposed to be really important in the books (to the point that she's the only one out of the mazerunner cycle to have flavour text).
I'm honestly surprised that this happened with a legendary this recent.
Finally submitted to my baser instincts and made (well, making) an EDH deck in real life. Around this guy.
The new Izzet guild champion, who was created solely to round out the set of guild champions in Dragon's Maze, which were unbalanced because of new planeswalker Ral Zarek (this would lead to a number of crazy things that would eventually lead to Ms. Unplayable up there). In the flavour behind the set, he's created by the Izzet Guild to run the race, only for Ral to kill him and take his place (meaning that Ral screws things up both in-story and in real life).
I managed to snag a copy of him from a friend, and I've had a thoroughly unprofitable Izzet deck in the wings for a while, so I figured I might as well take the chance.
One of my real life EDH decks has him as the general, and it's beautiful. Also, the reason Emmara is so terrible is she used to have Voice of Resurgence's stats but when the maze runner cycle got bumped down to rare from mythic they decided that was too good. Why they replaced it with something straight out of Legends, I'll never know.
Gatherer comments are gold sometimes. The best might still be Gelzo's "You are one of the top Woodland Sleuths in the forest. Solicitations for your service are numerous in quantity. Compensation, adequate. It is a balmy summer evening. You are feeling particularly hard boiled tonight.
Remember back in the 50s when they'd record like Elvis singing YOU AIN'T NOTHIN BUT A HOUND DOG and then they'd turn the record over and reverse it and it was all NYERP NYERP NYERP NYERP NYERP and people were all like, "That is actually the voice of Satan coming from that song."
Things that make me kinda want to collect more Magic Gatherers: Marathon watching an LPer I really like play the 2011 Duel of the Planeswalkers.
Yes, I know I said I might get into Cockatrice games and nothing ever came of it, but nonetheless.

Yay :)
I have at this point determined that my favorite colors are a tie between red, green, and blue.
Mine vary a fair bit. Started out as red, green and black, but now it's more about playstyle. I like to run roughshod over an opponent over rather than playing the permission game. Sometimes, that means Overrun. Sometimes, that means Sleep and Storm Herd.

(looks up) Huh. I was only planning to use two of the colors at a time, but that works too I guess.
Also, this is not to say I won't ever play as black or white, they just have slightly less appeal to me than the others.
Also also, Cockatrice got that cease and desist order. I knew there was a reason I wasn't using it anymore.
Yeah, Cockatrice is being hosted by Woogerworks now.
And I get what you mean. It took me a long time to play white because I found it so boring at first (as opposed to blue, which I thought was a sucky color for cancel-happy turbojerks). Matter of fact, I think the only reason I got into white was Doran.

So I'm looking for red and blue spells to round out my RU deck (which is probably hideously inefficient, but nonetheless), and I find this:
What the balls even is this shit?
I didn't put it in because it seems super situational, but... this is the second card I've encountered that has this particular... "transformation" as its flavor. I'm beginning to suspect one of the developers has a fetish for it :P
And I think it's more because 'Silence' is the Ur-example of something that keeps spellcasters from casting spells, and taking away the mouth is an easy way to do that.

Perhaps, but more often than not, people seem to go for the vocal chords to achieve a similar effect. But anyhow.
I have assembled two decks at this point in time. Might make a third, I dunno.
so from what i can gather the idea behind EDH is you sit down with your friends and play really long games with decks that are based around incredibly unwieldy/unlikely strategies or some sort of theme and you just chat and stuff super casual like?

that sounds pretty much perfect imho
Ideally, yes, this is exactly what happens and yes, it is kind of perfect.
Not all of the strategies are unwieldy. The best strategies are extremely wacky, yes, but the average commander usually encourages simple strategies. Take Riku, one of the legendaries released specifically for the commander format. He copies creatures and he copies spells; pretty straightforward.
Typically, EDH gets better the farther you move away from typical generals or flashy, overhyped legends. (This can be an exception if the obscure general actually makes the game more terrible. See Merieke Berit)
Any deck that runs Sheoldred or Phenax as a commander is inherently more sucky than a deck headed by Infernal Kirin or Norin the Wary.
For example, my favorite deck right now is my Shirei, Shizo's Caretaker deck. It consists of a lot of little guys with sac effects and a couple of high-level demons. It performs kind of poorly, but it has a really good flavor both Vorthos-type and Melvin-type. Also Chimney Imp.
For all the bull that Gatherer heaps on Chimney Imp, he's scarily effective with Shirei and a sac engine. With enough players, you can effectively ruin a player's next 5 draws in just two turns.
"I heard you liked being able to draw new cards. Not anymore, sucker!"

If that ever happened to me, I wouldn't even be able to be mad. I mean, it's Chimney Imp. It's a lock you created with a five mana 2/2 and a five mana 1/2.
See, Haven just demonstrated what I just said. The most weird and unwieldy the deck, the better you are at EDH and other EDH players will honor you for your achievement.

I just got started making virtual decks for fun. I don't think I'm quite ready for full-on EDH :P
Also, the proxy part of that article is kind of moot in an online simulator, is it not?

I just discovered the Cube format. It sounds really awesome. I kinda want to make one, but alas, I am still a novice. Might still be fun for us to try out sometime.
If you want to do a limited format, we could play sealed deck using this site. Modern Masters is the closest to cube, though it wouldn't quite be the same in sealed.

If we ever have a Heapers' EDH Night, I'll let you borrow a deck or find you one on the internet (yes, the article said not to do that either, but I can surely find you one that isn't terrible)
And yeah, it is moot. In fact, the bit about common staples also has to be ignored in part because every possible card's available to every player, and people will be jerks. For example, it's a good idea to slip in a Strip Mine to deal with the inevitable Maze of Ith that at least one player's running (as long as you don't play it with Crucible of Worlds or something). Sol Ring (and similar super-fast mana rocks like Mana Crypt) are often a necessity because literally everyone else is running them and you'll need to keep up. (Oddly enough, I don't think I've actually seen Duplicant before. Like, ever. And Sylvan Primordial is actually banned in EDH now, so good call on that)
