"Also in addition to it having pedestrian direction, Karin's sacrifice is undermined by it being allowed to happen because of one of the most offensively low effort bulljive contrivances I've seen."
(from another forum, and not a response to me, but just that my response is something i don't care to post there)
but madoka kaname's deus ex machina was really bullshit too
i feel weird talking about this show now because my memories of parts of it are hazy
at the time it really was one of very, very few things that affected me on a level i'd tentatively call spiritual, so i resent 'bullshit' but i have no defence to offer

sorry about that
if it helps any, i feel the same way when other people speak similarly of stories i find spiritually inspiring or something of similar magnitude
thing is i end up talking madomagi so much since other people talk about it it creates the illusion that it's one of my favorite shows and that i'm really into it and/or the genre it subverts (magical girls) and i'm neither
i never saw Nanoha... i remember a lot of people complaining about it
when i was a kid i liked Cardcaptor Sakura (the mangled dub, which was slightly less mangled in the ITV broadcast in that they at least showed all the episodes)
You are the end result of a “would you push the button” prompt where the prompt was “you have unlimited godlike powers but you appear to all and sundry to be an impetuous child” – Zero, 2022
Uta~Kata is basically the closest thing to a direct predecessor to madomago in spirit Umi Monogatari (a.k.a. Sea Story, no relation to "-monogatari" series) is another magical girl story that deals with its themes in very mature ways
the darkness was already extremely obvious even in the first episode, but maybe that's because i'd already had the thing about Mami's head spoiled and knew it was coming, so i was more attuned to possible indicators of darkness than i might otherwise have been
and the characters irritated me at one point because i figured the deal with the soul gems the moment they were introduced and was confused as to why the characters didn't realize how important they were
otoh i feel like the twists and turns are kind of beside the point in a show like Madoka Magica, what matters are the character arcs and those were strong and tied together thematically in a way that was compelling and meaningful

I think I agree with you on everything in that post except the last paragraph

"Have you ever filled up your computer storage?"
"No, that wouldn't hold water well."
"What do you watch your anime on?"
"A screen."
"What's your favorite music?"
"Music that I like to listen to."
but they are fun if shitposting is the order of the day
because they require some sort of atypical thinking to come up with
Did you have a favourite, or favourites?
Sayaka somewhat, initially, but less so later
Mami and Madoka were, comparatively, just there

edit: never mind i'm posting it [/flamebait]
what if i am homura
but "what if i am homura"
she's a much more sympathetic character than she first appears

people do seem to remember nanoha but no one regards that as highly impressive/awesome/epic/etc. anymore
when i was a kid i liked Cardcaptor Sakura (the mangled dub, which was slightly less mangled in the ITV broadcast in that they at least showed all the episodes)
i saw a little Sailor Moon, that was ok
i don't know them.

i think madomagi would have been better if they used more subtlety
e.g. more subtlety in introducing the audience to the setting/premise
i jave a love hate relationship with madomagi b/c i want(ed) to enjoy it but it just didn't come out right for some reason
and i've wasted so much time trying to figure out why

greater emotional subtlety would imo have detracted from the catharsis

I'm aware this is a problem what with the whole "aspiring engineer" thing
but i feel that that made it more distant and made it less emotionally accessible
and i didn't like that
i am accumulating TF2 keys as tradeable commodities on Steam
however
i am increasingly looking elsewhere other than Steam to buy games
i merely observe them
like i observe sayaka gradually going nuts but i don't feel it
and that is a serious flaw
YMMV
i can't argue with that, obviously we experienced the show differently
if it was a failure to me, p much every other show failed me worse
and most people...well, most people probably haven't even seen it
i remember space ships.
i would imagine not because i am not you and my interests are not yours but just asking
