Seriously, that was not a bad run. I got the work of an hour in about 20 minutes.
That piety bonus is delicious.
^ He also gives HP for killing things. I choked things to death, he gave me enough HP to not die while doing it. And for tougher enemies, I summon a demon and watch from a safe distance.

This is true, I'd still advise being cautious though. And also avoiding summoning demons (especially Greater Demons) unless you have to, since they have a chance to spawn hostile, which can really fuck you over.
I know that the aim of DCSS is to provide a roguelike experience with very few cheap deaths, but this is ridiculous.
I'm just walking around, minding my own business, when I fall down a shaft and end up surrounded by 14 Big Kobolds and 12 Kobolds, I shit you not.
I only just barely managed to escape, by using a scroll of fear and fleeing the room in the ensuing chaos. Had to use my only potion of curing as well. i found an escape hatch, and took it to freedom!
And by freedom I mean Sigmund and a Centaur. Who decided to wreck my shit.
it probably won't work. If it does though, make sure you tell him to stay still when you're done having him kill things so he doesn't follow you until the wand's effect wears off.
On the note of shafts, raising your Traps (& Doors if you're playing 0.11) to 8.6 should be enough to detect any trap in the game. And you'll want to do that anyway before hitting Lair, because Zot traps are horrific. ...Actually, it might be closer to 10 or so in 0.11.
My Draconian Fire Elementalist is doing alright. Sif Muna follower and he matured into a Yellow Draconian, which lets him spit acid, and provides a decent alternate damage inflicter if I come across anything that's immune to fire until I find another spellbook.
If I come across the more advanced Book of Fire, I can potentially learn Dragon Form, which would be excellent.
dude how low is your traps & doors skill that you're getting taken out by shafts and spear traps?
I think I've been taken out by a trap all of once in the entire time I've played DCSS, and it was a poison needle trap. I usually don't train Traps & Doors either.
Honestly I've never found even that to be particularly necessary. Traps can usually be detected by just hitting the "rest and search a bit" button.
You should have it up a little bit by the time you're at the bottom of the Lair since you'll need to detect Zot traps potentially, but that's about it.
At any rate, I'm gonna get a few points in Traps and Doors next time.
Although, if you ask me, my time spent training up Shields and Fighting was not wasted, either. I just prioritized slightly wrong, is all.
(Also, it should be noted that the damage range on spear traps is 1-26, and my AC was 11, which means I can block up to 11 damage; essentially, though it was my fault for not training traps, I did get phenomenally unlucky again)
Here, this is what I've been using for advice. The short of it is that you should turn off everything but your primary combat and defense skills for the first four or six XP levels, then turn on everything that's moderately necessary
^^Fighting increases HP, and if you get shields up high enough it completely negates the casting penalty. 5 shields for bucklers, 15 for regular shields, and 25 for large. I had a buckler, so I was getting shield up to 5.
^Well fuck I guess I can't use the newbie argument
And I've been using the wiki as well, I got the gist of raising your primary combat skills and all that jazz, I just didn't think traps would go from 5 damage (at max) on one floor to literally dealing half my HP in damage on the next.
Yeah, it kind of makes sense that the mage class with the best early defensive spell also requires you to be in melee range for the first 7 levels or so.
Maybe Octopodes were designed to be the mage-version of Felids. Just this one class that's focused on casting spells and dying really quickly.
Not that Octopodes are even good at casting spells. The only natural bonus that they have is to Evocations, of all things. The Artificer class isn't even recommended for them!
Alright, so I'm trying out Octopode Earth Elementalist, since Stoneskin is the only other AC-boosting spell that can be learned in the early game.
Sandblast's slightly longer range is helpful. Stoneskin, not so much. A 2+ AC Bonus isn't doing much for me.
...but, I grabbed a dagger of draining from the oddly-named goblin, and Earth Magic seems to level up faster than Ice Magic, so I guess I'll see where this goes.
Just remember that AC is not the only form of damage mitigation. Some spells just plain help you avoid getting hit; Air Elementalists get Repel Missiles and Swiftness, which both help with avoiding damage.
Wizards get Mephitic Cloud and Blink along with Repel Missiles, which helps them avoid quite a bit.
Ran into Edmund, Grinder, and Eustachio, all on D:6. That was terrifying. Also a two headed ogre skeleton and a player ghost. Thank Vehumet for Throw Icicle.
Draconian Fire Elementalist is still going strong. I've yet to test it out, but I think I should be reliably able to summon friendly Fire Elementals now by casting Conjure Flame and then Summon Elemental on the same square.

Why did I never try this before?

Man, I wish they had actually recommended this. Octomonk was amazing. It's like a whole new level of being an octopode.
Monk is kind of a challenge class but in other ways it actually makes the game simpler.
thus, we can conclude that a Felid Monk would be the simplest class of all.
but
there is a Transmuter class
sometimes the RNG just screws you over.
shafts are usually spotted beforehand, you just got really unlucky.

I've found a wand of enslavement. I'm deciding whether or not to try it on Mr. Sigmund.

I also got to summon an Ice Beast for the first time.

You should have traps & doors activated by D:4 or D:5. At that point, your magic should be strong enough to allow you to branch out.
Honestly I've never found even that to be particularly necessary. Traps can usually be detected by just hitting the "rest and search a bit" button.

you don't need Fighting or Shields if you're a caster.
Shields just get in your way when casting spells, and ideally you shouldn't be fighting anything in melee at all.

You might want a shield if you're playing as Op though. The defense bonus should offset the detriment.
^ Interesting, but I still wouldn't advise leveling shields until the midgame. Not that I would know, since I've never gotten to the midgame.
Counterpoint: Ice elementalists. Freeze is melee range, and since it ignores AC, remains useful.

I was killing Ogres and Orc mobs like it was nothing.
I know I probably would have gotten smashed during the mid-game, but that was a very, very good earlygame.
