Alpha Blogg down in two deaths. Flawlessed him on third try.
Alpha Blogg is a simple AI loop -- tap to enrage him, shoot and dodge the moment he opens his mouth, then tap him again while he's stuck in the wall. The hard part is threefold:
1) The room geometry is glitchy. If you're against the back wall, your strafe will hang up and then you get hit. Usually multiple times while he's stuck in the wall on top of you.
2) Alpha Blogg himself is glitchy. He seems to randomly cut off his charge sometimes, and if you fired expecting him to open his mouth, he enrages again -- but this time his charge autotracks with no minimum turning radius and is undodgeable.
3) As the fight goes on, he'll travel longer through his charge before opening his mouth. Sometimes he just doesn't open up at all, because fuck you. Combined with the already narrow window to dodge, this can make it nearly impossible to hit him without dying.
The key is to position yourself exactly opposite him each time you enrage, to maximize the distance and make it easier to both shoot him and get out of the way (not quite against the wall though because lolstuck). Spend the first half of the fight or so using normal charge beam shots, then switch to charged dark shots when things get trickier. You want to push him through the last half of the fight as quickly as possible.
With Seekers, you get a second super missile as well -- use these at the very end as you run out of dark ammo. If you're still at full health by the time he's almost dead, go ahead and play chicken. Without dodging, you have a much better chance of planting the super missile in his gullet at the last possible moment instead of moving early or bouncing it off his side. Watching this douchebag explode in your face is one of the most satisfying things ever.
Honestly, he's more annoying and occasionally glitchy than difficult. The real problem is that the puzzle to unlock the undertemple blocks off the cannon to the save point, so if you die, you have to go through the last puzzle room all over again, flipping platforms, fighting dark pirate commandos, moving a laser, and generally just wasting an absurd amount of time on every attempt despite the boss entrance being in the same fucking room as the save point.
Thankfully Grapple Guardian is much closer to his save point. I tried him once, derped and got hung up for a split second on room geometry, and found out the painful way that getting snared with the grapple is instant death.
I know that people have disparaged the 'choose-an-ending panel' style of multiple endings before, and perhaps rightly so, but I think that they have merit. Not in games like Mass Effect or Deus Ex where they tout their moral choices throughout the whole plotline and how they effect the world, only for it not to make a bit of difference in the end as every player gets the same set of endings.
No, the good way to do this is like Bastion or Dark Souls did it, where the player draws their own conclusions and makes their own decisions based on what they saw and learned during the campaign. Neither Dark Souls nor Bastion claim to pose deeply moral quandaries, nor do they have a true morality system of any sort. What they do have is their stories. Much more linear in Bastion's case than in Dark Souls'. During the campaign, the player is introduced to the world and its history bit by bit, and hopefully, forms their own conclusions. The story is an argument posed to a juror. In this particular case, you do not get to influence how everything happens, no in both stories, the biggest wars and important conflicts were already fought before the player took control of their protagonist. The protagonist is merely deciding how they want to shape what's left of their world. What's your verdict? You've played the game, you've seen and heard how the events transpired to bring this to pass, you have heard the arguments.
Set sail? Or come home?
Link the flame? or become the Dark Lord?
The game doesn't cast aspersions as to what is right, it provides its arguments and evidence to the player and gives them the freedom to choose.
In some cases, that's better than a morality system.
Man is a most complex simple creature: see what he weaves, and how base his reasons for doing so.
That's not really roleplaying as I understand it, point taken, but that's also not at all what Kex was arguing for.
I will say that Bastion definitely cares more about you than something like Dark Souls does. It's a small and intimate world, as opposed to a vast and apathetic one.
I think Kex is basically saying that for him the essence of "role-playing" is being able to project the player's will into the world and do things with said world, while what MachSpeed is basically saying is that for him "role-playing" means being able to project the context of the game world onto the player and allow the player to assume the perspective of the character. In a way, one is projecting oneself onto the player-character, while the other is projecting the player-character onto oneself.
I feel like there is so much stuff to do in Hyrule Warriors that just doing what you like is generally a lot more doable and fun than going for 100%. I still have a ton of things I have not done in it, especially with everything the DLC added, but I think it would probably be pretty tedious to try to do all of it.
Link (with sword), Princess Zelda (with rapier) and Twili Midna. Zant is also a lot of fun, but i generally prefer to play as the good guys if i'm given the option.
Who are your favourites?
You're probably right about the completionist approach, since there's a lot to do and the levels do get a bit samey after a while.
While we're talking Wii U, my Nintendo thing is aegisaglow and you should all add me so we can fight.
Hyrule Warriors: The Termina map was awesome, I've barely touched the Twilight map though. Supposedly there's gonna be a code which comes with the 3DS game which lets you get all the new content on the Wii U, so I'm gonna have to snag that off someone, maybe play through the Twilight stuff with Tetra or whoever.
Splatoon: I picked it up yesterday (didn't even have to trample anyone in a mad dash for savings), and it's really good. My favorite weapon so far is the Splosher--I just picked up the Sploshing Machine, which is better on most points, but its sub and special aren't as good. (Sometimes you just have to call in an Inkstrike on your own position, just to be sure.)

Who are your favourites?
Not including DLC, my favorites were Zelda (Rapier), Link (Master Sword), and I guess Lana (Spear). I usually used Zelda every chance I got, so she is way overleveled compared to everyone else.
Including DLC, my favorite characters to use are Zelda (Rapier), Young Link (who is basically Fierce Deity I guess), and Twili Midna. I had a hard time getting used to Young Link at first, especially since I was trying him out on the new adventure maps when he was super low level, but I have grown to like him. I think it is kind of cool to play as MM Link again.
I agree with you about playing as the good guys; I found the Ganondorf levels in story mode where you basically have to conquer Hyrule not nearly as enjoyable as the hero ones. They also seemed kind of silly to me, since it seemed pretty clear that you were going to have to switch back to the heroes and beat Ganondorf anyway.

Yeah, I think it is kind of easy to get burnt out on Hyrule Warriors if you play it for an extended period of time because the gameplay is a bit repetitive. I feel like it can be fun in moderation though, particularly if you avoid doing the ultra difficult missions until you actually have high level warriors (i.e., the exact opposite of what I did).

Did you get Splatoon from Walmart or Best Buy? I saw they both had a pretty good deal on it, so I actually ended up ordering it the other day too.
The Wii U is actually my brother's, i should probably get a proper account though.
i didn't immediately warm to Lana but by the time i'd played through story mode once i was feeling a lot more positive towards her. The book, the spear and the summoning gate are all a lot of fun to use, imo. i appreciate how the spear combos are mostly references to past games, that was nice.
And yes, Young Link was a lot of fun to play, too. idk, really, i like everybody. Fi's great. Darunia's great.
In Metal Gear Solid 3, Snake will often have conversations with Para-Medic about movies she likes, and without fail, it always turns out that he has never seen the movie she's recommending, no matter how famous it is.
I always thought this was unlikely, but now I realize he's just GMH.
because you're not interested? they don't interest you from an aesthetic standpoint, maybe?
i mean they're good games, they're some of my favourites
i dunno
I think it's the worldbuilding/aesthetics, or maybe the pace of the action in the 3D games. The 3D games definitely come off as slower than the 2D games, for one thing.
Also for some reason I feel more inclined to play Twilight Princess than Ocarina of Time or any of the other 3D offerings.
I mean, yeah, I forgot to say that Twilight Princess is on my to-get list. Despite Ocarina being the one people keep saying is the best. Though I could get both for Cube, in fact, which is nice since I have a Cube.

I've beaten Link to the Past, and have played parts of Zelda 1 and Awakening. I've also watched someone play a lot of Twilight Princess, and also someone else play various parts of Ocarina and Majora's Mask and even Wind Waker. I have run across enough series lore to stand a good chance of knowing what people are talking about when it comes to Zelda, despite not having played many of the games.
That said, you're likely right when it comes to movies.
Twilight Princess is possibly my favourite, for what it's worth. But i do generally prefer the 3D ones over the 2D ones, which makes it sound like we're opposites on this. i dunno, i could never get drawn into the 2D ones in the same way, i felt more like an observer.
Something makes me think you'd really like Majora's Mask (maybe the storytelling, or the characterization?), but i could be completely wrong about that.
I've heard that Majora's Mask and Wind Waker are sorta the lesser ones among those two generations of games.
Why do you think it would suit me well?
but yes, MM is the one with the moon
and ooh, that's a controversial opinion
OOT was the first one many people played, and has an 'epic' sort of feel that stuck with a lot of people
MM is much more involved in terms of story and characters, which is why i thought you might like it more
people argue over which was the better of the two, OOT is certainly the more popular but it's by no means a given that it's the better
as for the Wind Waker, i think it gets unfairly overlooked due to the cartoonish graphics. it's great fun, if perhaps marred a bit by the slightly dull treasure hunt segment.
Did you get Splatoon from Walmart or Best Buy? I saw they both had a pretty good deal on it, so I actually ended up ordering it the other day too.
Yeah, I think Walmart was cheaper but I had a gift card from Best Buy, so I used that.
The way the game handles map rotation bothers me less than I thought it would, but it's still a little frustrating--there was at least one time where I didn't like any of the maps/modes on rotation, and it would've been nice to be able to choose. The tower is my favorite ranked mode so far--it reminds me of the minecart in TF2, although it doesn't just stop if someone else gets on it. But in TF2 you can't transform into a squid and conceal yourself within the cart or on its sides, so there's that.

i don't have splatoon
I mean, I appreciate that they're a well-designed and well-appreciated series, but I don't feel an impulse to want to play them.
Except maybe Parallel Worlds A Link Between Worlds.

i'll check that LP out
hm
maybe OFF isn't what i'm after, then
Yume Nikki certainly isn't
i have Anodyne for that
Nier seems cool but i think it's console only?
i have ordered TWEWY but it won't be arriving for a while
