I suppose the new revelations explain just why Stan was so sad that the kids abandoned him that day

The hell kind of parents name their twin sons Stanley and Stanford? You're practically asking for them to get each other's mail from debt collectors.

Can we ever forgive Ford for what he (indirectly) did to McGucket?

I feel like it says a lot about Ford's ego that not only did he refuse to do the right thing and destroy the journals, but his attempt at hiding them was so half-hearted.
I mean, #2 somehow ended up in the hands of Gideon Gleeful, so it can't have been hidden that well, and Dipper just randomly stumbled across #3 within walking distance of Ford's house.
I partially chalked that up to incompetence born out of insanity, since he clearly wasn't able to take good care of himself by the time Stan met back up with him. Heck, Stan himself looked a lot healthier than Ford.
As for Gideon, Journal #2 wasn't the only magical crap he was in possession of, and he's a manipulative con artist, so it's not any more unreasonable than Stanford, least to me.
I also don't think Ford is a terrible person, but he does have an ego that's been burning ever since he got turned away The Best College Ever and had to run up against a brick wall with his experiments. I don't place the blame on Ford for McGucket since it was accidental, and McGucket sought out the "solution" of his own accord.
I still wonder how Gideon failed to notice the "CONTINUED IN JOURNAL 3" message at the end of Journal 2.
I thought of it as Gideon missing it because he's the type of person to skim through for anything that might personally benefit him, in contrast to Dipper who practically made Journal 3 his entire life, but I'm not sure how intentional that was.

Ford just handing over the tie as if it were no big deal shows how, well, out of touch with society he's become. Even before he was trapped in the portal, he was recluse for many years and seemed to keep himself occupied with only the paranormal...

Bringing this back because I TAKE UMBRAGE with some aspects of the most recent episode.
Massive spoilers below, obviously.
Normally I don't really care if shows try to impart a moral. But holy shit could they have been any more beat-over-the-head with the "escapism is bad" thing? Now, I used to follow Hirsch on twitter, so maybe I'm reading more into this than I should be, but I find it really hard to not just see the entire midsection of the episode (which is most of it) with Fantasy and Reality literally being on trial as anything other than a longer form of Hirsch telling people to "go outside" in response to criticisms or lengthy fan theories.
I'll admit, I take anti-escapism morals kinda personally, because I don't have much of a life, so the internet is like 90% of what I do. So it does get under my skin when people tell their audience to, I don't know really? The advice never goes farther than "stop watching so many cartoons / reading so many comic books / playing so many video games / whatever". Sometimes "go meet girls" is thrown in there (hi Flex Mentallo) but never anything cohesive.
But like on top of that it struck me as really transparently preachy. Like the "hand me a microphone" scene and then he drops it? Yikes. I get it, the phrase annoys you, but wow. I also get that the target audience for Gravity Falls is people younger than I am (mostly youngish teens. IE people either the exact age or slightly older than the protagonists), but I feel like that just makes it worse, because "everything you're invested in doesn't matter" is an awful thing to try to tell a teenager!
I don't know. Like I said I am easily annoyed by this particular aesop (and it's one a lot of media seems to have, which I'm sure is some kind of ironic) so maybe I'm just overreacting cuz I should be applying for a job right now probably and am not, and I may not sound like it but I actually enjoyed the episode overall. That particular aspect just left me with a bad taste in my mouth (figuratively).

If I were in a better state, I might have found this episode a bit preachy.
But, well, as it stands, the moral hit me hard. There have been several times this past year when I've literally been like "maybe I'll just stay in the basement forever and live in a fantasy world!" and seeing Mabel, whom I identify with in a lot of ways, effectively go through the same struggle? I dunno, something about it made me step back and be like "...whoa, is this what I look like?"
Also, in the episode's defense, it's not like this came out of nowhere. Mabel's been needing this lesson for a long time at this point.

The mike drop got a laugh out of me just because it's exactly the kind of silly over-the-top thing you'd expect from Mabel's imagination.
I admit that in general I've been kind of fed up with Gravity Falls for the better part of this year. The ridiculous schedule switchups (which aren't Hirsch's fault) and the writing feeling like it's rushing to a conclusion (which kind of is) have left me somewhat soured on the series overall.
Not a bad show by any means, but I'm not sure I'd put it in my favorites anymore.

He obviously thought the information in the journals was scientifically important, or he wouldn't have put so much time into them in the first place.
And what happened to McGucket was clearly accidental, and McGucket was there of his own volition and presumably knew the risks as well as Ford did.
The worst thing Ford has done as far as i can tell is failed to empathize with his brother who's spent all this time trying to rescue him.
i'd go with flawed, rather than terrible person.
