It's not nearly as bad as everyone's making it out to be, but I do have a couple issues with it from a usability perspective.
Tumblr's designers seem to have run with the idea that minimalism means not having to label your shit. For example: on the old page, if you wanted to link to a source, there was a text box clearly labeled "Source". In the new design, you have to figure out that the source field is in the little menu with the cog icon.
It's a minor enough gripe that it doesn't really matter--most people who use Tumblr do so regularly enough that they'll adjust quickly--but it still seems reflective of a bad trend in UI design.

I like minimalism, but that trend is stupid
In my mind it runs counter to the accessibility which is ironically intended by this trend
It seems to be catering to those who need it extra-simple without having to deal with a bunch of "buttons and knobs" afforded by a more straightforward interface

Precisely. I think the problem is that minimalism is executed so unintuitively.

Xkit was a Missing E-like extensions that added a bunch of features to Tumblr in order to make it not suck.
Anyway, I am using User-Agent Switch on Google Chrome and setting it to Internet Explorer 9. Besides some glitches and stuff I have to deal with, everything else runs as if the update hadn't happened.

I lost two followers over the past day and I don't know why.
Only thing I can think of is that ragey people didn't like that I posted something positive about the new layout.

It's possible they also deleted there accounts because the just hated the new update that much.
I would have assumed that the update was minor enough (though breaking extensions suck) that people would just sit in deal ,but the way some users are talking about it I wouldn't be surprised if many people jumped ship.

Confession: whenever I see my follower count drop, I do a cursory check to make sure all of my circle of friends are still there. >_>
Remember back in the 50s when they'd record like Elvis singing YOU AIN'T NOTHIN BUT A HOUND DOG and then they'd turn the record over and reverse it and it was all NYERP NYERP NYERP NYERP NYERP and people were all like, "That is actually the voice of Satan coming from that song."
I remember seeing that picture once. I also remember someone saying that was just the plants naturally changing color in the winter.

The iconic image was obviously photoshopped to hell and back anyway:
See that deep, vivid green? That's not a color real grass is.

I never left the default wallpaper up very long, myself, but I saw plenty of it because my siblings were always screwing up our computer and forcing me to re-install XP.

I answered most of the questions I got in my askbox today. I'll answer Louie's tomorrow because I want some more time to think about it, so sorry for the delay!

“The Brazilian Institute of Environment and Renewable Natural Resources (IBAMA), last defence against the construction of the Belo Monte dam, delivered the licence to the consortium of Brazilian companies Norte Energia on June 1, 2011. This information has been forwarded by the media and social networks all over the world with a picture of Raoni crying. The caption added that his tears were provoked by the announcement of the final validation of the project. Indignant, Chief Raoni denied on his official website: ‘I didn’t cry because of the authorization of the construction of the Belo Monte dam and the beginning of the construction (…). President Dilma will cry but I will not. I want to know who gave this picture and spread this false information (…). President Dilma will have to kill me in front of the Planalto Palace (Palácio do Planalto). Then you will be able to build the Belo Monte dam.[5] ” The wonders of Wikipedia, people. Really should have done this the first time this showed up on my dash.
False use of the picture aside, this is an actual issue that could use some support. Here’s a link to Raoni’s petition and one to another petition by Amazon Watch
And this video is supposed to explain alternative forms of energy that could replace the dam
At first, I had no idea what could have spawned that
Then I remembered that "4 Situations That Make White People Feel Racist" was on Cracked a while ago.
I kind of get where OP's coming from. The article's very premise is troubling, the article itself isn't much better, and Felix Clay's doesn't have the best track record when it comes to criticism.

tumblr just blew my mind
do you recognize this location?
you should
It's Bliss
It is if it's carefully manicured, but I would not be surprised if there was digital manipulation there.
I honestly always assumed the image was just CGI. Were the other Windows wallpapers real places too?

Bliss (the one CA posted) was the default background on Windows XP.
I never used the default background for XP for more than 2 minutes.
It was on all the computers at my sixth form, so i mostly associate it with back then.

isn't Felix Clay like the one writer there who doesn't usually dabble in stupid social commentary bullshit?
he's the guy whose column is called Tyrannocopters isn't it?

Cracked why do you feel the need to write about things you have no knowledge of.
Also Adam Brown's article on hip-hop today made me want to hurt myself and others.
cuz there's little to say about them beyond "man that article is funny".
I mean I like about two thirds of the articles on cracked it's just that the bad ones are really bad.
it's also really pretentious to imply you're an expert on something when you clearly know little to nothing about it, as the hip-hop article does.

I feel like he wrote it just to be controversial and bump up those views.
^^^ Doesn't surprise me.
^ Or like Clay and his opinions on black people.
But yeah, Cracked is generally good.
