Speaking of racists, I made the mistake of reading the comments on one of the White House's tweets about DACA. Tell you what, Twitter racists: if you want to secure the Mexican border, why don't you go magically create good jobs in Central America and help end the Mexican Drug War.
Except that you can't, and you won't, because you want them all dead or in prison. Fuckers.
I prefer to actually add a comment if I have something to say, with rare exceptions. I use tags to organise, so unless there's a joke that I desperately want to make with tags (and it happens), I don't comment in them.
Plus, sometimes I see people write comments in tags that outright bug me or I think are really clever and want to respond but can't because tags.
I was pretty floored by the "Beethoven is black" thing that this person seems to be pushing.
I understand the frustration some people feel about the lack of historical figures that look like them, but that doesn't mean you can just make stuff up.
it's pretty easy for me to believe that beethoven or whoever else had african ancestors and maybe even looked like it, and it's worthwhile to look at how that was suppressed by historians, but the "was black" thing kind of worries me. i mean race is socially constructed, and beethoven was living in a society that constructed it differently from the modern US or wherever. just kinda yeah

The Richie Rich collection retails at prices that only the poor little rich boy himself could afford: tanktops cost $62, hats $70, wallets $110, sweatshirts $158, and backpacks $200.

Yeah, all of that. And looking at contemporary busts of the man... I wouldn't be surprised if he were at least partly of African descent. Not only are his features very classically mixed-race - there was an American fellow who looked a lot like him at the turn of the century whose name escapes me - but there have been black Africans in Central Europe since at least the beginning of the Holy Roman Empire.
And really, for whom would it change what? He was Beethoven. He was very much a German regardless of racial background, and he was a mad genius and a bit of an asshat. It just changes the shade of how he is portrayed by half a degree and probably inspires a few more non-white folks to give classical music a shot. None of these are bad things!
But in any case, calling him "black" imposes a dubious modern, American-centric paradigm on a society very different from our own and is probably not even entirely accurate within that paradigm. He was probably of mixed descent, and noticeably so, and people didn't care. You don't have to extrapolate beyond the facts to make a point.
well it's a thing you put on your body that other people see, you want it to fit well, be functional and last, those sorts of things require craftsmanship and superior materials and that costs money.
not that an embroidered richie rich crewneck is by any means the pinnacle of design or craftsmanship or something i'd ever wear in a million years, but you get my point
I still don't understand how anyone could think anything over $20 is a reasonable price for any single item of clothing.
If it is really well-made, by hand; constructed of durable, comfortable, beautiful materials; and fits you well and brings out your best features... why shouldn't you pay for that effort and quality? It's unfair to the maker.

does it though? Like I own $5 t-shirts that I've been wearing since high school and they still fit fine.
Some are more intact than others, but you get my point.

largely I just buy clothes at department stores or thrift shops. I just kind of don't care about clothes that much and sort of resent the implication that that somehow makes me stupid.
$5 is too much, you could just use a sturdy burlap sack
anyway I'm considering buying a$40 hoodie from the school neuroscience club. it's totally overpriced and not that great a design but I'm pretty resolved to looking terrible, as evidenced by my shorts socks combo
i've owned $5 t-shirts that have lasted since high-school too
though i had to get rid of them because they ended up being way too large
and i thrift all my clothes right now too because i don't have a job. but most of the stuff that i thrift was originally in the $60-400 range. except my t-shirts those i still buy in multi-packs at TJ Maxx because TJ Maxx t-shirt multi-packs are the best thing

Not being a big clothing person is fine, but acting like people should feel bad for appreciating more expensive clothing and acting as if the thought of more carefully made things costing more is silly is really kind of insulting.
And no, Naney's comment was not aimed at you. It was aimed at the idea that $100 is expensive for clothing. For bad clothing, the price is exorbitant, but it is nowhere near the high end.

This.
Getting good, ordinarily expensive-ish clothing cheap is a glorious thing. So are cheap clothes that fit and last.

Well OK, but you have to understand that my thoughts here come from somewhere. I've been witness to brand peacocking my entire life and I really do not understand it, and I've been insulted over that before. Even out here in the sticks where you'd think such things would be uncommon, it happens all the time. Though if I had to guess, what's considered fashionable up here is probably several leagues out of step with what is considered fashionable in more developed areas.
naruto:well have you planned out what to do after revolution
sasuke:what
sakura:yeah, after all, it'd be reckless to believe that just knocking down the existing structures would fix everything
sasuke:what
kakashi:that's right. the economic/political structures through the various villages right now are pretty hard-wired, and to change them for the better, certainly, the first step is doing away with the old, but if you don't have any steps afterwards, you're likely looking at the same old kind of powers rising up and taking control.
sasuke:what
naruto:so if we're going to go ahead with this revolution we also need to make sure that, beyond just killing the five kages, we tear down other capitalist structures underneath their reign and replace them with a system that uses resources and abilities - of which we seem to have almost no limit to, considering our own sizable skill with jutsus that allows us to move mountains themselves, our generate massive amounts of electrical power, for just a few examples - and put them to work making sure everyone is fed, sheltered, and has what they need.
sasuke:what
sakura:which isn't to say we can just stop there. there are other oppressive structures at work, not limited to just capital and how it is used and who it is put in the hands of, but multiple axes of power in general, as brought on by how history has been structured and the narratives given to us by both those in power and society as a whole, and working to remove those should also be part of our goal.
sasuke:what
kakashi:correct. now, if you'll look at this scroll here, i've started writing some theories on how, after revolution, we can use our jutsus, both as individuals and as a collective, to keep food production intact and distribute it to absolutely everyone
sasuke:i just
sasuke:i was just thinking i'd kill the five kages
