the right wing is already well aware of SJ, and tends to regard it as an attempt by crazed feminists and bitter minorities to take over the country, or an evil attempt by the universities to control our thought, or the foolish product of white guilt, or some mixture of the above.
There are exceptions. Right-wingers from ethnic minorities like to use the element of identity politics as a cudgel to complain about things like welfare.

Personally I recommend that everyone own a globe, to give a better idea of how things work and how ALL large-area maps are horribly distorted one way or another; all you get to pick is which distortions you accept.
to be fair you might come away with a skewed perception of what parts of the world are more 'significant' if you only looked at one map projection your entire life
this isn't a new idea that tumblr came up with, the Gall-Peters projection was originally marketed on those grounds
the Mercator was designed for navigational purposes, and prioritizes the shapes of coastlines over accurately depicting the areas of landmasses
I think it's pretty uncontroversial that common map projections (and other mapping choices) reflect the biases of the culture that created them, and that they encourage cognitive biases.
It's more the breathlessness of the conspiracy theory and the ignorance of the fact that people have been talking about this like forever and that alternative projections have gained quite a degree of prominence that bugs.
Also the complete conviction that you can pull whatever sounds good out of one's ass for an assessment of what those biases are. Instead of, y'know, research.
People hate the Gall-Peters projection because it distorts the shape of countries and continents so drastically, and we are so used to seeing an accurate coastline shape. Not because it makes Africa bigger.

To be honest, the main thing that bothered me about the original post wasn't even the conspiracy aspect, but the simple fact that it seemed to present Gall-Peters as if it were objectively more "accurate", which suggests the blogger, well, didn't actually know what they were talking about.
The bit implying that Mercator's distortions were deliberate just perplexed me more than anything, since it seemed kinda tacked on at the end there.
You like Isaac Asimov, XML, and shoes with toes. You think the Segway got a bad rap. You own 3D goggles, which you use to view rotating models of better 3D goggles. You type in Dvorak.

just reminding everyone that the traffic signal was invented by a black man and thus is not appropriate for white people to use. i see people stopping at red lights a lot so yeah just a general public service announcement.

oh wow this is amazing, why did i never learn this in school, clearly it's because all institutions are evil white supremacist garbage, etc.
actually more seriously I'm curious now. Of course, the "invention" of the traffic signal was probably really a bunch of incremental improvements so you're probably referring to one or two of the more significant ones.

The invention of the traffic signal is commonly attributed to a black man named Garrett Morgan, who invented a mechanical signal after witnessing a particularly bad accident in Cleveland.
In reality, of course, it's a bit more complicated in that, because yeah, it was a series of incremental improvements. I don't actually know that much about it myself, though I can say that the modern electric three-lamp signal we think of as a "traffic light" nowadays is derived from older railroad signals (to the point that the earliest ones were, in fact, built with surplus railroad parts).

I'm curious
What kind of blogs does Tumblr tend to recommend you guys?
Because it seems like 90% of mine are pony ask blogs and I got over those years ago...
I disagree with the assumptions being made there, but not entirely. I'm sure that a few of Park's more vocal critics are indeed harbouring those sort of biases, but I think that the size of the counter-reaction is just as much due to Colbert's status as anything else. Which is to say, it is not because she "has power" (which bloggers of her sort do, like it or not), but because she decided to go after a well-known satirist on somewhat specious terms, apparently without recognising the intent of the original statement. It gained traction, and people noticed because Colbert is notable, and reacted poorly because, well, the accusation is kind of stupid.

it's common sense, the world is round, a map is flat, some things are gonna get distorted

thought peters looked squashed before it tho
"Yeah well your face is racist!"
Is this the thread where we talked about Colbert?
I forgot.
