I seem to recall Wayside School is Falling Down being my favorite of the three main books, but I can't remember why.
CA: When I was younger, I associated button-copy signs with West Virginia, as even back in the 1980s, the vast majority of the signs in Virginia were retroreflective. I've also seen a few button-copy signs in Maryland, but I have no idea if they're still there or not.

@Lee: Ohio was actually still posting button copy signs as late as 2002, believe it or not, so they're still relatively common here.
I remember when I first noticed the switch. In 2001 or so, they did major reconstruction on I-70 east of Columbus, and replaced all the signs. My parents and I were stopped at a red light near an onramp and I found myself staring at the sign, because something seemed "missing". After a moment, it hit me, and I said "hey, that sign doesn't have those little reflective dots!"
