Revised that last post because it was also over the top, only not for George Carlin self-aware reasons.

The video is over the top for comedic reasons, but "the planet will be fine, but we'll be fucked" is basically the whole problem.

We can all go live under ground like the Morlocks...course there will be no Eloi because everything on the surface will get baked....

Or maybe it will be a reverse situation where the Eloi live underground where it's nice and cool and the Morlocks are force to adapt to the horrible, Dark Sunesque client...

I think I just created the nerd equivalent to a auto collision with my references...

I don't know Dark Sun but the idea of a reversal on The Time Machine's premise sounds pretty cool.

To read about, I mean, not to live through.

Odd confession: I'm fond of American Typewriter.

It's cheesy but somehow it looks honest and inviting to me.

Wow, I actually found 512 MB of RAM for this ancient Compaq laptop at a reasonable price ($20 shipped). That'll max it out and hopefully make Chrome a little more pleasant to use.

And why this laptop and not the big machine? The other machine is a little too big, it overheats, and for simple Web browsing, I don't really need a Core i7.

Friday and I both have 18.4" screened laptops. I've started using my work laptop a great deal as it's much more portable.

This laptop is also smaller than even my old Gateway, which is nice when I don't feel like having a lot of stuff on my bed. And the built-in keyboard is nicer than either, though I'm not crazy about either the layout or the clitoris mouse (I have a Microsoft wireless mouse, though, so that's covered).

I tend to use a mouse over the touch pad.

I have the "clitoris mouse" as you so elegantly put it on my work PC, but never think to use it.

Though I really should stop forsaking the clitoris, it's probably more efficient than the touch pad.

American Typewriter will always remind me of the first few Be Squared seasons of Good Eats, since that's what Alton Brown used for the display text in the show during that era.

My laptop is a low-end 15" Dell I got when I started college in 2009. It runs Xubuntu very well, and even Windows 7 performs decently on it, so I'm content with it for now.

Lately the fan has me worried, though. It's gotten much louder and it seems to be running much more often. I imagine this has something to do with (a) the fact that we've had 80-degree temperatures and our house lacks air conditioning, or (b) the fact that I leave it on constantly aside from the 6 or 7 hours a day I'm in bed.

    What's cheesy about American Typewriter? </still not really a font/typeface person>

    HI!

Fouria: It's not as "serious" as Courier or Letter Gothic (both of which are IBM fonts; American Typewriter is a recreation of the default Smith-Corona font), and it's been overused in the past.
  • You are the end result of a “would you push the button” prompt where the prompt was “you have unlimited godlike powers but you appear to all and sundry to be an impetuous child” – Zero, 2022
I associate American Typewriter with the original Center Of Science and Industry, which used it prominently in the last 8 years or so of its existence.

Perhaps that's why I find it cheesy; I associate it with the sort of lighthearted aimed-at-children stuff you would see in an old science museum.
  • I've learned to tolerate drama...except on the boat
American Typewriter evokes a lot of things to me: Office Depot's old logo, OfficeMax's current one, Clifford the Big Red Dog...
  • THIS MACHINE KILLS FASCISTS
CA: Ah. Before Good Eats, I associated it with goofy office-humor-ish stuff from the 1980s. And Krunchers potato chips.

Oh, also Cub Foods. Which, like the old COSI, I associate mainly with the mid-to-late 1990s, since that's when SuperValu gave up on Columbus and sold all their Cub stores here to Kroger.

The video had a Barbie on the barbie. I though tht visual pun was much more clever than it actually was back in 1994 or so, probably because I'd never seen anyone torturing their sister's toys before.

    You mean Cider?
  • edited 2012-05-26 22:04:42
    THIS MACHINE KILLS FASCISTS
Morbid: Hard cider. You don't hear about it much in the US, since after a lot of Germans came over in the 19th century, lager became the fermented drink of choice here. It's still far more popular in the UK, and it's also what apple cider vinegar is made from.

    @ Lee: Ah, I see.

It looks warmer and less clinical or utilitarian than Courier to me.

I kinda find Courier hard to judge, because I wasn't really around for the typewriter era and as such I had no idea if it served its original purpose well.

I do like it for working with code, though. Personally I prefer Bitstream's Courier 10 Pitch (included with most Linux distros) to Monotype's Courier New (included with Windows), even if they are merely two digitizations of  the same typeface.

I should mention that if you sat through the credits of Avengers, you've heard Soundgarden's latest.

  • Touch the cow. Do it now.
Sometimes I've used Courier New just to pretend I'm using a typewriter.

    Feels kinda retro
