Remember back in the 50s when they'd record like Elvis singing YOU AIN'T NOTHIN BUT A HOUND DOG and then they'd turn the record over and reverse it and it was all NYERP NYERP NYERP NYERP NYERP and people were all like, "That is actually the voice of Satan coming from that song."
Bunny Naney, last page: I think whale mentioned once that the commonly used term for people of South Asian descent in the UK was Asian, and people of East Asian descent are (whoops, mistake corrected) East Asian.
  • (*That was me asking*) Huh. Ok.
  • Not a hybrid rabbit-skink spirit
Bunny didn't say that last page, Naney did!

    >Do you think there will ever be a black Doctor Who?

I hope they will always choose the best actor for the role regardless of skin colour, but a part of me worries that they might consider this too much of a risk.  That shouldn't be an issue, since the BBC tend to be fairly good on the equal opportunities front, but many Doctor Who fans seem to think the show will be ruined forever if the Doctor is anything other than white, British and male.

    >I always wondered. I know "Paki" is an offensive word for a person of south-asian decent in the UK, but what is the correct word? No-one ever seems to mention whatever it is.

    Asian.

Ninja'd.  "Oriental" is not exactly PC; I'd be wary of saying it.  I think "East Asian" would normally be preferred.
  • Ok!

    Whoops! Sorry about that. Derp.

You'd think I'd make more of an effort not to get you mixed up after you revealed yourselves to be fellow Pokémon fans today.

A year or so ago people used to get Anonus and me mixed up all the time.

    It was quite amusing.

Fouria: I thought there was something suspicious about that. Duly corrected.

Wow, now I feel like a total jerk. Sorry, everyone.

    Who doesn't like Pokemon?

I admit I'm not as big a fan as I was when I was 7-13 when it was my SPERG INTEREST.

I still know almost every last moveset of every Pokemon through gen 4. (*I'm fuzzy on 5*)

    Except Politoed.

Oh, you're fine, darlin'. Don't worry about it.

You weren't a jerk, just uninformed. I mean, now you know, right?
  • And I have 1 1/2 cubic feet of Pokemon cards I have nothing to do with.

CA: I guess, yeah. I just feel like it's a bad thing that I was ever uninformed in the first place.

Naney: It rotates in and out of being my SPERG INTEREST. It's definitely in right now, no doubt partly because of all the Black and White 2 news floating around.

I really wouldn't worry about it.  How would you know, anyway?  Lots of words are different over here.

It's not really a slur, anyway, just a bit dated.  I think if you used it here most people would just be rather uneasy in a did-he-just-say-something-racist? sorta way.

When I was 5 I knew everything about trains.

I shit you not, I was a fucking train prodigy.

    My 3rd word was train.

I may not have been able to count past 25, but I knew Whyte notation.

    ^ I see.

That's "Oriental", I mean.  "Paki" is at least as insulting as the c-word, and for most people probably significantly worse.
  • Ok.

    Confusing.

good thing I'll probably ne'r have to know these things.
  • Hmmm...

I dunno what to listen to.
  • In my time on earth, I've seen three decades, two centuries, and two millenniums, and I'm not even 18 yet.

When I was that age I was all about cars and trucks. Especially pickup trucks.

I had this bright red 1995 Dodge Ram that I would play with on the floor of our apartment in Whitehall

...even now when I think about it my first thought is "damn, that was an awesome truck."
  • Touch the cow. Do it now.
I liked cars when I was five. This is an oddity in my life

    I liked animals, especially dinosaurs.

I felt like a weirdo because all the other boys I knew preferred vehicles of some kind.

Five was when I had a dinosaur fixation. It's not likely to become a fixation again, but it's nice to learn an interesting thing about them now and again.

Playing Gran Turismo 4 when that game was released rekindled my obsession with cars, albeit only briefly, due to the huge selection of makes and models in the game.

I find it a bit amusing in retrospect that I had such a stereotypically "boyish" obsession, given that it was only a year or two later that I started feeling like, as I thought of it at the time, "a girl in a boy's body."
  • Not a hybrid rabbit-skink spirit
I don't think I ever cared for vehicles all that much.
  • When I was a kid i hated human protagonists in books, I liked animal or anthro ones.

    > That feel when you look back and you were a furry the whole time.

After the initial infatuation wore off, I never had much interest in cars. I became more and more interested in fantasy.
  • My Dad loves cars.

In fact, he worked for NASCAR in some capacity at one point, though I couldn't really tell you the specifics as I don't know them.

    I think he's a general mechanic now.

  • imagei will watch the heck outta this pumpkin patch
Around five or six was actually when I started playing with dolls, believe it or not, although they never managed to eclipse animals because people just weren't as interesting as other creatures, and I was completely apathetic towards anything mechanical or otherwise artificial, with the exceptions of buildings and works of fiction.

The animal obsession lasted through most of primary school; for a while I was convinced I'd become a zoologist when I grew up.  But then I got into video games and that became my obsession for a while.
  • Touch the cow. Do it now.
I liked My Little Pony for a while as a kid...I know that's hard to believe...

But then when I was 9 I was given an NES for Christmas which set off a roughly four-year video game obsession.

For some reason I can't remember what my obsession was after cars, which is strange to me.

I know my road obsession started about 9 or 10. We moved out to the suburbs and I started paying attention to the various styles of street name blade used around here...it sorta snowballed from there.

When I was 10/11 I liked to draw freeway signs on paper. I had some idea that there were general rules to how they were laid out, but my knowledge came entirely from observations and I got a lot of stuff wrong. I didn't ever look up actual standards until I was 14 or 15.

I've always had an interest in animals, but which ones in particular has changed over time.

First it was birds. Then it became dogs. Now my predominant fixation is reptiles.

And one of the weirdest parts is that one of the reasons I became interested in reptiles in the first place was that when I was little, I found it strangely soothing how cartoon snakes would always draw out their s sounds for several seconds. Now obviously, it wasn't the only reason, but it was a surprisingly big one.
  • You don't get it Kexruct. Television Tropes & Idioms is a horrible website full of horrible people and creeps and webmastered by a horrible person and I am never going back to it and most of the people I like who used to trope were driven away by horrible people and their frightening behavior. It is horrible and Heapers' Hangout is 100% a separate entity.

It's always just a bit amusing to me when people who were there for like two months say this kind of thing.

Squid was there for longer than 2 months, I'm damn sure of it.

But in case that's not enough, I was there for approximately 3 years and I can say that TvTropes is shit.
