I think the apocalyptic tone and mudslinging is part of how Trump won. There is a reason for satire and insults, for keeping people accountable, but I think that over the last few decades, the media has, in general, greatly failed.
If the distress signal of "The candidate is terrible and should not be allowed anywhere near power" is always on, when you get someone as truly heinous as Trump running, then sounding that signal, well, it's a bit of a boy-who-called-wolf. Yes, it's 100% the wolf's fault, but the other 0% is the boy who never intended the ill that happened and I never understood why we're supposed to be so cheesed off at the boy. It created a media situation that Trump was able to exploit in a way that was never intended.
Satire was supposed to make it possible to speak truth to power, not to make it so everyone gets insulted by equal-opportunity-offenders and no accusations actually mean anything.
So my Sims went to University, set fire to their dorm, set fire to the frat house, set fire to the main campus building, turned students into frogs and slept through lectures.
Hm, i wonder how this novel set in medieval France starring an albino peasant who likes reading is going to go [looks up setting's town] ["Called 'Cathar Country' by the local council, "] oh.
