    They were secret super-spies

It's some dumb part of the Marvel Universe that got included in Amazing Spider-Man 2 for some goddamn reason.

is his American accent any good

i'm picturing it being really bad
  • My dreams exceed my real life

    Judge for yourself.

He seems a bit uncomfortable with it, IMO

Tilda Swinton gets to keep HER accent though, despite being a fucking Tibetan

i feel like i'm not a good judge, i didn't tend to find the US accents in Doctor Who unconvincing, whereas going off how American viewers reacted they were definitely way off
  • My dreams exceed my real life
The New York accents in Daleks Take Manhattan are the British revenge for Dick Van Dyke in Mary Poppins

    yeah see

Dick Van Dyke wasn't even attempting a London accent, he just kinda made one up, and as a kid i didn't find it jarring cuz i didn't realize it was even meant to be Cockney

whereas in that Doctor Who story, after people pointed out how bad the accents were i could hear they sounded kind of wrong, but they were close enough that on first viewing i didn't notice anything, i'm quite sure

Maybe it's like how the Pirate accent was created by a failed attempt at a West Country accent.

It doesn't sound like a West Country accent, but it sounds like an accent that MIGHT exist.
  • imagei will watch the heck outta this pumpkin patch
it's distant enough from a West Country accent that i didn't make the connection before i learned that was where it came from, but close enough that when i found out it seemed so obvious that that's what it is that i wondered why i never picked up on it before

my brother and i watched Last One out of Beach City and how is Pearl this relatable, omg

(she's my favourite character at this point)
  • imagei will watch the heck outta this pumpkin patch
@Aliroz i was remembering what you said the other day, about the feels stuff getting in the way of the adventure

    granted, you were joking

but actually, i don't think Steven Universe is really that kind of show?  Avatar is a show about adventure, so is Gravity Falls.  SU is at least as much about the everyday and the emotional, and i think that's actually what differentiates it the most from the other shows it usually gets mentioned alongside.
  • I've learned to tolerate drama...except on the boat
To be honest, Steven Universe reminds me way more of Pepper Ann than it does Avatar
  • imagei will watch the heck outta this pumpkin patch
    i can see that, yeah
  • imagei will watch the heck outta this pumpkin patch
i only just found out about the most recent Ava's Demon flash animation

    we do that too.

I don't think I've ever seen anyone do it, though. Selfish bastards

Same. It's hard to place but it sounds entirely natural, which is interesting.
  • “I'm surprised. Those clothes… but, aren't you…?”
John Barrowman's is even more on point but that's because he lived a large chunk of his childhood here and is thus cheating.
  • My dreams exceed my real life

Robert Webb's accident is not as on point, thought it kinda just helps the joke

"Relax Janice, that's just part of my wicked sense of humoorr"

The funny part is that the bad American accents end up sounding vaguely like Minnesota accents.
  • Touch the cow. Do it now.
I remember that when I was a kid I genuinely thought there was no such thing as an American accent, because American speech was the default and entirely correct.

I don't expect people from other parts of the world to be able to tell these apart though

I mean, I can't really tell apart most English accents...

    <Jerk Mode:  On>

Accents, like nuclear weapons and not-getting-made-fun-of-by-Rozzy, are for superpowers.

Nations less than 1.26 million square miles large need not apply, because they are LEETLE BABY NATIONS that I could squish with MY BARE HANDS on accident while holding a small globe.

    <Jerk Mode: Off>

With a nation as varied and diverse as America, there are of course regional accents.  It makes sense that some would sound similar to the uninitiated, because that's just how our brains work.  We're much better at distinguishing subtle differences in things that are familiar to us.  Besides, even someone from outside the United States can probably tell a Southern accent from a New York.

Watching clips of British comedians trying to do American accents can actually help.

Notice how they tend to go a bit nasally on the vowels, and oveRemphasize the Rs, especially at the ends of letteRs

I want to maybe run an Unknown Armies campaign at some point, myself

How do you know you'll fail if you never even try?
