i like Pearl. Between "who's your favourite gem?" and "It's Over, Isn't It?" i feel like she just keeps on getting better and better.
i feel more conflicted on Snape, but i remember finding him an intriguing character.
i think the difference for me is maybe that we've seen a lot from Pearl's PoV, and we've seen her in all kinds of situations and moods. We always see Snape through Harry's eyes, and both are very hostile towards one another.
Well, there's that as well: Pearl is obviously fond of Steven. Snape regarded Harry as lacking in any positive characteristics, and looked out for him out of a sense of duty, not out of genuine fondness.
Man is a most complex simple creature: see what he weaves, and how base his reasons for doing so.
Pearl's a very complex character whose passions and attachments and sorrows pull her in all kinds of conflicting ways. Ways that are both endearing and fascinating.
Her projecting her own self-hating values on Connie completely unknowingly but earnestly was incredible. She caused a bad effect, trying to do a good thing, with nothing but good intentions.
You know Less Wrong has been desperately trying to do damage control for Roko's Basilisk for years, and it will never work, but when you get right down to it, the really embarrassing thing is MIRI.
Like Eliezer openly runs a "charity" based on the idea that people need to give him and his foundation money so AIs won't turn evil. That is an open fact that everyone, including Eliezer, would acknowledge, and it's absurd.
but i think people sometimes conflate that with the basilisk? so it becomes 'give us money or the AI we're building will torture copies of you', like some kind of weird blackmail

I mean it is blackmail
Eliezer made up a fake AI doom scenario and he wants people to give him money to stop it. Roko's Basilisk adds time travel and simulations into the mix, which were all already present in Big Yud's world view, they just hadn't been put together like that.

ah so this is how his descendants will become emperors of California.
Listen... There's another national anthem playing, Not the one you cheer At the ball park.
Where's my prize?...
It's the other national anthem, saying, If you want to hear- It says, "Bullshit!"...
It says, "Never!"-
It says, "Sorry!"-
Loud and clear-
It says: Listen To the tune that keeps sounding In the distance, on the outside, Coming through the ground, To the hearts that go on pounding To the sound Getting louder every year-
Listen to the sound... Take a look around...
We're the other national anthem, folks, The ones that can't get in To the ball park.
Spread the word...
There's another national anthem, folks, For those who never win, For the suckers, for the pikers, For the ones who might have been...

My favorite phishing emails are the ones that claim I need to give them my password so they can upgrade my University email account to 2 GB of storage.

I had the experience of transferring to a four-year school after I'd already gotten an associate's degree
So I was new on campus but not technically considered a "freshman" because I already had enough credits to qualify as a junior
The Peter Parker character traits include: his full name is Peter Benjamin Parker; he is Caucasian and heterosexual; his parents become absent from his life during his childhood; from the time his parents become absent he is raised by Aunt May and Uncle Ben in New York City; he gains his powers while attending either middle school or college; he gains his powers from being bitten by a spider; he designs his first red and blue costume; the black costume is a symbiote and not designed by him; he is raised in a middle class household in Queens, New York; he attends or attended high school in Queens, New York; and he attends or attended college in New York City.
I think maybe they have one of these for Dr. Strange too, and that's why Benedict Cumberbatch is doing an American accent for that new movie

also for a second i confused robert owen and richard owen, a notoriously crotchety biologist of the time, and that was confusing
...the answer is probably no
- I found myself unable to move
- it felt like someone was pulling my braces out
I thinkle it might have one of those really vivid short dreams I get, but I also didn't *feel* like I was asleep?????
not alarmed, just weirded out
^ I had a very similar moment when it felt like I was floating and was watching myself sleep, and I was unable to move
Bring it up with your doctor I guess? I think they make medication for that.
