see that's the thing, Lovecraft is primarily known for writing short fiction, a form which encourages an economical approach and a focus on, in Lovecraft's case, horror
it's not really a format which is suited to detours into the personal and private lives of the characters unless these relate somehow to the themes of the story

I was double-checking an email from TWC when I noticed this gem:
TV Customers: We can only connect your cable to a working TV set.
I'm sad, at Buffalo Exchange there was a vintage leather jacket that fit perfectly in every way but then on the back there was a space where a Harley Davidson patch had been removed

I'm just imagining someone setting up an installation appointment for cable TV and paying all the fees and then telling the cable guy at the last minute that, oops, we don't actually have a TV that works, just this broken one with the fake woodgrain all over

what do these people want, steamy fish-people sex scene flashbacks?
I think it's more like
Lovecraft's characters never seem to be married, or express interest in marriage, or get married. They don't have romantic affairs, or seem interested in having romantic affairs. Romance or sexual passion are not things that ever seem to drive, or have driven, his characters.
That said it's weird that people complain about that, because of how much people complain about that stuff always being forced into stories it doesn't belong in.
Which seems to come from a very cargo cult understanding of adulthood?
Like, sex and violence are things that adults engage in more than children(well, serious violence) but the essence of adulthood is more about responsibility, ability to understand nuance, self-sufficiency.
Assuming that you can be more adult just by adding sex is what gets us modern superhero comics.
y'know i was listening to "It's Over, Isn't It?" for like the billionth time and i realized that Steven Universe is closer to the kind of show i was hoping Torchwood would be when it was announced than Torchwood turned out to be in practice
like, the relationship situation Pearl describes, and her feelings about it, that's actually really complex and difficult! especially considering it's a children's show
whereas Torchwood was just the Doctor Who formula but with sex monsters, swearing and gore shoehorned into it, it felt like an inappropriate kids' show, not a show for adults

TIL Ctrl+Esc brings up the Start menu
I found this while, of course, trying to use Ctrl+Shift+Esc to bring up Task Manager, as one does

The only way that you are going to defend your independence is by actively defeating all do-gooders, and that destruction is going to make you seem a threatening figure to the more subservient herd. Say what you like about an obnoxious jerk: at least he isn’t conned by some fraudulent charity. A man without sympathy will never be suckered. So you might as well remain unkind: others may hate you, but at least they won’t be taking advantage of you.
Obliterating everything That's not your friend Nothing can stop you now No ghost to bring you down When there's nothing left to lose You win

are you suggesting that this is somehow not a villain monologue from a mid-2000s shounen?

It gets better: it's not a one-off mistake. All of those little blue signs at that intersection have "MREDIAN" on them.

when my life finally ends and I am called to account for my sins, my failure to see Kubo and the Two Strings on opening weekend will be held against me
every time a new Laika movie comes out I always worry about dilly-dallying to see it because they don't do that well at the box office and they probably vanish from the first-run theaters quickly
My offline best friend is a huge Laika fan, actually, and has complained about this. So it's funny you mentioned this.

yeah...
well, props to Phil Knight to propping the studio up, and probably using his rich-guy muscle to keep making Focus Features distribute this stuff to theatres
