I don't really think a single poster (me) on a handful of obscure sites (haruhi.net, Unexplained Mysteries, and maybe but probably not OddFuture Talk) is really going to bump us up from low key to...anything but low key.
Lazuli: Sure, you can advertise elsewhere. Text doesn't use much bandwidth, and we don't host any images aside from avatars, so we should be fine for now.
As for banned tropers and known troublemakers, we banned most of the worst ones back on Vanilla, and the app process should spot anyone who want to be a palooka (i.e. "getting sucker-punched all the time") or a shit-stirrer.
Remember back in the 50s when they'd record like Elvis singing YOU AIN'T NOTHIN BUT A HOUND DOG and then they'd turn the record over and reverse it and it was all NYERP NYERP NYERP NYERP NYERP and people were all like, "That is actually the voice of Satan coming from that song."
Hi, everyone. Wow, a lot has happened since last night, hasn't it?
First off, Bobby, I'm sorry to hear about what's going on, and I hope you feel better soon.
Second, about advertising. I was actually considering inviting a friend of mine from school on here. I think the most people we could get from that is about 3 or 4, but it's more likely going to be 1 or 2, if anyone actually comes. Would anyone object to that if I ever got around to it?

Do eet.
Yeah, I don't guarantee mine getting anyone at all. The only person who's even sort of likely to join is Moon Princess and we haven't spoken in a long time.
ooh, I could maybe get Miss Hedgey from haruhi.net. Anyone remember her?
Squid: possibly, but the entire database was something like 20 MB of raw SQL when I imported it. That's a drop in the bucket these days.
I'm not sure how Garden stores messages, but it's got to be better than the way TVT does it (each thread is its own table, and I get the feeling MySQL doesn't like that above a certain number of rows).

Gator I like seeing new posters. :]

Okay, then. I'll try it out.
In other news, this morning, I felt really bad. I'm a bit better now, but still hoping this weird disease goes away quickly.

@ Irene: Try dark Princess Cadance. or is it? (watch the finale Irene it's really good) :p
@ Justice: :D
You know I asked about the table for every thread thing a while back and Eddie said it was for performance reasons. Apparently it makes the threads easier to move, delete and such, which I suppose it would. That site doesn't generally have a problem with storage space (except when people upload literally fucktons of avatars); bandwidth and processor time are more of an issue there. According to Eddie processing is actually faster when each thread has its own table, don't know if somebody more tech savvy than me (not difficult) can confirm this?

It might make sense from a performance POV. Conceptually, it's pretty retarded.
I suppose issues such as a thread being made that might be named the same as another table that does something else could be addressed by appending something to the name.
Still, that data model has got to look like ass.
And there other ways to address performance...assuming MySQL has indexes or something.
It's easier to move entire tables around, yes, but it's also awful schema design. For a forum, you'd typically have one big table with all the messages in it, then categorize them by IDs you'd set in a different table. That's assuming you even bothered with SQL in the first place, and didn't just run it as a Usenet-style spooler and make each message a file.
If you design the schema and queries well, the database can do a lot of your thinking for you, and putting entire threads in one table removes that possibility.

Thanks, Bobby and squid. :)
I just had a steam shower that helped a bit. I'll probably make some tea a little later.

Chai is good. Especially vanilla chai and apple chai spice.
I also like green tea and black tea about the same overall. There are some varieties of each I prefer over the others.
I'll probably make myself either white chai or chamomile, though.

Tea is da bomb diggity.
Friday and I have an absurd amount of different flavors.
I love Thai Iced tea, but it requires a tad more effort to make with all the sweet and condensed milk and the steeping until everythigng the tea touches is stained orange forever.
"Thanks, Haven, Professor Gator and, well, everybody for the support. I'm OK right now. I'm a lot better than I was, so please don't worry about me."
Okay, good to hear that. You've always been one of the people on my list of people on TVT who I'd like to get to know better but never got around to interacting with you much.
And yeah, MySQL has indexes. I think InnoDB may actually be turned on by default these days, at least on Debian. Hell, even SQLite has indexes and it's usually distributed as one (huge) wad of source code.

^^Same here. I know you've probably heard this a million times, but you seem pretty cool. It would be nice if you could come here more often.

lee: cool.
As a note, by "advertise" I mean "ask some folks I know, and maybe put a link in my signature".

And I do remember Miss Hedgey.
Hello Matt. :)
I don't think there's any room for banner ads.
And if we get a MASSIVE INFLUX of new users, it'll probably be from a MASSIVE OUTFLUX at TVT rather than anything.
