Okay I actually don't know what your deal is with that thing. Can you explain, preferably without hyperbole.
1. It's too vague to be of any real use to anyone as a tool for actually correcting mistakes
2. It contributes to the culture of "Argument is just about shouting fallacies at people"
3. It's an easy justification for racism and bullying
see personally i thought the "friendship is transitive" bit was insightful and I try to keep it in mind, which is part of why i find your whole thing about the thing kind of strange.
i can uh, sort of imagine 2 happening if you applied it to a thousand internetters instead of "people i know" like i do, but 3 is just i have no idea what you mean. are your freaks vs progs friends saying "GSF9 therefore kill the jews" or what?

It occurs to me that even though I swear by Notepad++, it's got the kind of interface that a lot of people would find intimidating, with loads of buttons and menus and such...

Sometimes I wonder why updated releases of RailWorks changed the name to the less-memorable Train Simulator
Man, I'm still in a shitty mood. Work didn't help, go fuckin' figure. Doesn't help that I have to stay up later to pay the car people for the diagnostic.

Should I feel guilty about liking Roald Dahl's work despite his antisemitism?

But can he see why kids love Cinnamon Toast Crunch?
We'd met IRL and were doing some kind of LARP thing where we were sisters who had magical girl powers with outfits and everything. Yours was pink and super feminine and made you look kinda like Rose Quartz except you could also throw fireballs and stuff. Mine was... blue and purple I think, and I don't think it looked like anyone's outfit in particular. I don't remember all my powers. And you were the really energetic kinda exciteable idealist one and I was more aloof. Together, we fought evil and adopted a cat.
Then the cat turned out to be evil, so we had to send it to the Evil Kitty Jail because we weren't about to actually hurt the cat even if it was evil.
And at the end of the dream I suggested we adopt a new cat that was not evil and that we needed to check the cat's credentials before taking it home..

he cannot alas
Yes, my magical Jew powers are limited in that respect. I can, however, tell you whether or not something is kosher with reasonable accuracy, explain the High Holy Days to a layman (except for Sukkot because the fuck), pronounce guttural consonants with righteous fervour, and accept and transmit a special and dangerous form of weaponised shame best expressed through a combination of chilly Germanic brooding and the existential terror of a desert epiphany.
Theory: "well-written" is a statement that doesn't actually mean anything without elaboration
True, but so is any vague value judgement tied to the technical construction of a work of art. There are vague-sounding terms that have concrete, comprehensible meanings with quasi-objective criteria, such as painterliness, but *how* something is done well, rather than that it "is," is the important part.

The thing is I feel too often it's unelaborated on and I am not aware of what someone's criterion of what good writing is

A Gator could write an equally well supported essay about feminism
They would both be bullshit, it's just that the latter is supporting the most idiotic thing ever to fight a strawman
I am sorry

it's something i read when i was even worse at talking than now, i guess. easily digestable bullet points is the kind of thing i needed.
