It is believed that any Indo-European languages originally functioned on some sort of base-twenty (vigesimal) system, but shifted over to a more convenient decimal system later. Celtic languages, in particular—northern dialects of Welsh and traditional forms of Irish and Scottish Gaelic are primarily vigesimal—which had a significant influence on the Latin dialect which ultimately became French. Interestingly, many dialects of French not spoken in France have used other, decimally-rooted words for 70-99; in Switzerland, huitante is a not uncommon form of 80, and octante was formerly in use.
If someone actually held a hot soldering iron like this, I imagine the reaction would be more "Tom after Jerry smacks him with a hammer" than...whatever that look is.
TIL that basically every golf course is a reconstruction of a type of terrain that basically only exists in coastal Scotland, where the game was invented.
The major design elements of a modern golf course are the synthetic analogues of various existing features of those early Scottish playing fields, and the fact that golf arose so directly from a particular landscape helps explain why, more than any other mainstream sport, it remains a game with a Jerusalem: it was permanently shaped by the ground on which it was invented. Groomed fairways are the descendants of the well-grazed valleys between the old linksland dunes; bunkers began as sandy depressions worn through thin turf by livestock huddling against coastal gales; the first greens and teeing grounds were flattish, elevated areas whose relatively short grass—closely grazed by rabbits and other animals and stunted by the brutal weather—made them the logical places to begin and end holes. (“A rabbit’s jawbone allows it to graze grass lower than a sheep,” Gordon Irvine told me recently, “and both those animals can graze grass lower than a cow.”)

"What is not good is the tricking of new audiences into experiencing these baby steps — paying for them — as if they were great masterworks, and as if they had any impact on the stories being produced today. JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure was rebooted, reader. Part seven, Steel Ball Run, began an alternate timeline that overran the original one. In 2004 Araki began negating his own back catalogue. He knows too. There is no reason to republish, as recently as 2015, this meaningless junk."

This is one of those days when I find myself wishing I were anywhere but here.
i'm approaching the end of Stardust Crusaders and my biggest complaint so far is there is WAY too much violence against dogs on this show
like i'm only *slightly* not serious here, obviously there's plenty on JoJo's that isn't for the squeamish, but the violence against dogs is far and away the most upsetting to me, and there's weirdly a lot of it

After losing two flash drives in the span of a year, I started keeping mine on a chain with Applejack to keep them company.

today's gonna drag on forever
But I don't see how having someone on board who hates it really adds anything, other than hateclicks from fanboys.

if the alternate timeline was reason not to republish the earlier stories, how come the earlier stories were so much fun, hm?
