People like Bruce Tinsley who absolutely raaaaage over the concept of trigger warnings just make me go ???
Like, the entire point is that it's just a courteous way of saying "if this subject matter makes you uncomfortable, you might not want to read/watch/view this"
Why don't these people end up raging at, say, MPAA ratings?
The irony is that MPAA ratings are way less objectively scored and way more messed up in terms of priorities.
part of me suspect that the latter at least is a feature to people like Tinsley
You are the end result of a “would you push the button” prompt where the prompt was “you have unlimited godlike powers but you appear to all and sundry to be an impetuous child” – Zero, 2022
I kinda wanna throw some emulators on my Raspberry Pi but (a) I don't have a working USB controller, and (b) getting audio out of that is kind of a mess because the cheap phone charger I use as a power adapter makes the audio output all crackly-sounding.

Since "dihydrogen monoxide" is just a silly name for water, I'm going to assume that "force field" here is just a silly way of referring to an umbrella. :P

I kind of have no interest in playing it because--and this is uncharitable I'm aware--it's a JRPG.
A JRPG where you don't actually have to kill anyone, sure, but it's still a JRPG. And if Middens and OFF! and EarthBound convinced me of anything, it's that being weird is not enough to save a JRPG from being a JRPG, at least to me.
i will vouch for the mario and luigi games being fun
they kinda combine combat with little... iunno, "minigames" implies they are more complicated than they are
basically, combo attacks and dodging and countering are all reaction-based and you get bonus damage and stuff for doing well and there are some really fun boss designs
also, I find I like OFF! less and less as time goes by, as its good points recede from view and all the bad habits it's instilled in the RPGMaker community continue to linger.

Combat in Paper Mario: TTYD is slightly more elaborate, but basically works the same way.
I really do not understand why people are personally offended by trigger warnings.
They can be silly, and some people take them absurdly far—this one chick Kex used to follow had anything with water tagged, for glob's sake—but getting angry at people who are that overly sensitive is like kicking a puppy. It's just wrong.
I'm surprised you remember that.
I actually checked on that person somewhat recently and that person says not to use any pronouns, and that person does not have a name but to use "Vee" if necessary.
I guess that's interesting in, like, a modernist sense or something but it makes it immensely difficult to actually talk about Vee and it just strikes me as somewhat egotistical.
Not that the concept of warning people of traumatic stuff is at all silly; I just find the method a bit... weird. I wouldn't call them "trigger warnings," for one thing, as that refers to such a particular situation and it is a touch disingenuous.
yyyyeah, I'm in psychology and "trigger warning" refers to a very specific thing related to a very specific illness. It's perfectly fine to warn people of gross content inside (heavens knows how I'd get by without that), but co-opting something as specific as trigger warnings to do it is kind of bad.
To point out how weird the OFF! comment looked to me, I rewrote it like this:
"I find I like Cave Story less and less as time goes by, as its good points recede from view and all the bad habits it's instilled in the indie platformer community continue to linger."
i don't think i've ever actually seen another platformer use much of anything from cave story

Yeah, I was more referring to how CS started the trend of indie game platformers, and how many of them picked up on the bad habits of CS (such as somewhat shaky controls), yet it would be unfair to blame CS for that.
I should emphasize that CS is maybe my absolute favourite game ever, so I'm not trying to insult it here.

but it's still funny
i hadnt heard this song in almost 5 years and i can still remember the whole damn thing
i ask cuz i don't generally like JRPGs due to the combat mechanic, but those games played with that mechanic in ways that i liked

^ I'll admit I didn't know those games existed. >_>
Still, games like FEZ and Super Meat Boy are obviously indebted to Cave Story above all.
