Blue Shells are evil and imo should not exist, but when you have an item you have to use it before you can get another item, so you don't have much choice in the matter

You aren't playing Dark Souls if you don't start as Defiled with the Pendant, only using fist weapons and never levelling.

git gud scrub, and learn 2 read the anti-duhring

the blue shell should never have been invented, it's when Mario Kart jumped the shark, yo.

changing the rules to win in Monopoly is fine, though.
  • I've learned to tolerate drama...except on the boat
I remember in Double Dash!! I actually managed to avoid a blue shell
  • imagei will watch the heck outta this pumpkin patch
Yeah, in some games you can dodge them.

    Still a pain, though.
  • We would set the game up in the conservatory, play throughout the day, leave it set up overnight and get back to playing it in the morning.

Also imo Mario Kart DS was a good game, in spite of blue shells
  • I played Mario Karts on the GBA. I was awesome at it.
  • Touch the cow. Do it now.
I used to really love the original SNES Mario Kart, so it's sad to see them BLATANTLY RUIN IT FOREVER

i'll admit, i sucked at SNES Mario Kart.  It was much too hardcore for me, i was terrible at it.  Never mind finishing first, i could barely stay on the track.

The later games just feel . . . more fun?  You can have a race.  i don't find them easy, for the most part, but they're not seriously punishing, either.

Also the graphics in the SNES one have not aged well, imo.
  • Touch the cow. Do it now.
I beat every race in the original SNES Mario Kart on the highest difficulty (150cc). Using Koopa Troopa.

    I laugh at your incompetence
  • Touch the cow. Do it now.
also 16-bit graphics are the best, what are you talkin' about?
  • Key thing for me when it comes to video games is fun. Am I having fun? Then I'm enjoying the game. If the fun levels go down for whatever reason, I stop having fun.

    Simples.
  • We can do anything if we do it together.
I played Mario Kart: Super Circuit pretty obsessively when I was a kid.
  • I've learned to tolerate drama...except on the boat
imo 16-bit graphics have tended to hold up better than first-gen 3D graphics
  • The blue shells are fucking brilliant.
  • One game I seriously need to play is Sunset Overdrive.

But I don't have an Xbox One.

    Fuck.

    Well, yes, true.

i wasn't complaining about all SNES graphics, anyway.

i have not yet watched this video, but i already know it is thoroughly wrong because the blue shell is an abomination.

i seem to be in a combative mood.  Hm.

I feel like Mario has some of the most well designed and appealing enemy races in any platformer.
  • imagei will watch the heck outta this pumpkin patch
1 minute into the video i'm already mad
  • imagei will watch the heck outta this pumpkin patch
if you're in front you can still get red shelled or struck by lightning

getting blue shelled definitely doesn't make the experience more fun, since in most games it's impossible to even dodge it, and at best it's really, really hard

also why the heck is this video presented in a chipmunk voice
  • imagei will watch the heck outta this pumpkin patch
ok, the second half of the video is fair, i guess

mario kart is 2hardcore4me i guess

still don't like the blue shell

Maybe I have antinatalists figured wrong.

Maybe they've just gotten to the "In the Flesh/Run Like Hell/Waiting For The Worms" part of the cover version of Pink Floyd's The Wall that is their life. Soon they will get to the finale, and get better. Or die. Or loop around. Whatever happens at the end.

Getting annoyed at a recently-arrested child for misusing the word "invention" is the most dundridge thing you can do.

Certain things superficially bear the markers of making something annoying but the cumulative effects of not HAVING those things has a more negative impact

It's great being in first place, obviously, but that's something everybody wants, hence, conflict. There needs to be an element in place to prevent people from taking too commanding of a lead without incentivizing mediocrity. The blue shell serves that purpose.

You could honestly switch "Toolsie" in that quote for "Tre" and it would still be true.

Ours is the swiggity-struggle, Tools. Hopefully they'll go multiplatform with it if there's a sequel; part of the deal with Microsoft was guaranteed ownership of their IP, so it's a possibility unless they continued with their MS exclusitivity deal.

Not the blue shell.  The blue shell rewards mediocrity and punishes success.  Not only that, but it does so disproportionately.  The blue shell can lose you a race.

The red shell is a good item.  It is hard to dodge, but it can be done, without the use of an item you're not going to get in first place and without having to slam on the breaks.

The blue shell is not superficially annoying but ultimately beneficial.  It's horrible, sloppy design.

I agree with the particle on this one.

The joys of your favourite game developers swapping consoles for the next gen.

  • at the risk of being the guy on reddit who puts "dae" at the beginning of every post

is anyone else kinda sick of having these lengthy arguments (they're not really discussions, if they were I'd be fine with them) on game design??

I mean if I'm in the minority here I'll just deal with it, but I feel like I'm not.
  • Touch the cow. Do it now.
maybe we should have an "argue about game design" thread.
  • I'm tired of it too

it has made me like video games a lot less
  • it's frustrating because this is to some extent a topic i actually care about a good deal but no one goes into these willing to have their opinions changed and largely they're about games i either don't play or haven't played any time recently.

i'd actually rather have the discussion about whether or not Hearthstone's paywall is a good thing
