Is it wrong that the "turn in your assignment during the first five minutes of class or it'll be counted a day late" thing seriously makes me angry?

Like, why do instructors get to just make up the rules? That an instructor can define "1 day late" to mean the thing was turned in half an hour late and not literally the next day is completely asinine. The instructors should be obligated to accept work turned in at any time during the class period of the due date for full credit.
  • why do instructors get to just make up the rules?

    because they teach the course?

That's not good enough. The school ought to define a standard set of rules that apply to all courses, and "work may be turned in at any time during the class period" ought to be one of them.
  • It's an understandable thing because you don't want people using class time to do last-minute edits on their project. And you know that's what students would use them for.

i feel this kind of top-down inflexible approach to education is the enemy of effective teaching.

Full disclosure: my lab report is finished and I fully intend to hand it in at the time specified.

But it's the principle of the thing, you know? I abhor having to acquiesce to the authority of people who shouldn't have authority over me.

i mean maybe in this case it's ok?  But i feel that different tutors have different teaching styles, and different pupils have different learning styles, and different subjects have different requirements, so one-size-fits-all rules handed down from on high are unhelpful and restrictive and create a lot of bureaucratic muddle that nobody wants to deal with.

That's a fair point, I guess. I mean there are plenty of such university policies that become a pain to deal with after a while...especially inane departmental policies like "you have to take a quiz on academic integrity and cheating to get any credit for this course"

But my basic reaction whenever I encounter a rule I don't like is to say "YOU CAN'T TELL ME WHAT TO DO", and for that to work I'd need to be able to point to some higher authority that backs me up on that.

Also, it occurs to me that I'm only angryposting now to let off the anxiety that's built up from nervousness over starting my new job tomorrow.

Also, I start a new job tomorrow.

    Thanks.
  • Most of our assessments are online, and have a deadline of 4pm on the handing in day. Not sure what it is for other courses, but for the forensic sciences, that's the way it goes.

Mine vary quite a lot, honestly.

Most of my classes this semester have our quizzes during class. Straightforward enough, right? Well, my Statics professor only does open quizzes, meaning he encourages us to talk amongst ourselves, refer to our notes, etc. to make sure everyone gets the right answer.

My soil science professor takes a different approach: he saves time in the lecture by having all the quizzes online, but imposing a 16-minute limit to make it similar to taking a quiz in class (that is, you don't have time to leaf through the textbook for answers). He leaves a 36-hour window to take the quiz, which is nice.

Basically the temp service called and they were like "we have a job for you" but I didn't really pay attention to the description because I was just glad to have a source of income again

If there were a standard set of rules that apply to all courses, "work must be turned in at the beginning of the period" would be one of them, because you generally don't want students editing their homework based on you explaining it after turning it in, and it's not fair to the majority of students who finish their homework before class to either
    1. not explain the homework during class
    2. let people turn in the homework after it's explained

I hate to admit you're right on that one, but...yeah, you're right on that one.

See, I was always of the opinion that allowing people to game the system is "fair" as long as everyone has equal opportunity to game the system, but I guess the goal is to keep people from gaming the system in the first place.
  • one of the reasons I dropped out of college is that deadlines are an anathema to me and my professors were pretty uniformly unwilling to extend mine

one reason, mind you, of dozens.

for what it's worth, I usually accepted late homework during class anyways because it was almost always clearly someone late to class for other reasons

finding any Tress MacNeille character hot except Callie and possibly Gadget elicits the same NO NO NO reaction that sexualizing Quick Draw McGraw does, so

i feel you, i got deferred last week for having low protein which was ????

    aww :(

    also

maybe the "matriarchal" perception comes from Cornelia

who I'm convinced at this point is named after Cornelius the Corn Flakes rooster
  • but that sorta thing doesnt happen super often, like that is maybe the second time i had been deferred in my 2 years of doing this

    Yeah it is.

Honestly, my skin breaks super easy, so I'm gonna have to be very careful about not getting scratched.

The syllabus for my chem class mandates a particular proprietary textbook but my professor is constantly telling us to look at the OpenStax chemistry book because she likes it better

I'd be mildly resentful about this, but (a) I paid next to nothing for the textbook I bought anyways, and (b) I understand that it's the department, not my professor, who decided what book goes in the syllabus
