Know your lines? Of course you know your lines! But I don't want to just hear your lines...I wanna hear what's in YOUR SOULS!!
Would someone tell me why people keep defending Steven Moffat's work on Doctor Who because I've seen a great majority say that he can't write for crap and I'm inclined to believe it
I'm not sure if I want to watch Doctor Who really, I saw like 2 episodes (Bad Wolf and the Waters of Mars thing) and couldn't really get into it
it was my favourite show for a while, but it's not everyone's thing
what you should know about Moffat is that for the first 4 series since the revival his episodes had a reputation for being very clever and very scary, and he was easily the most popular writer
when he took over the running of the show he started to attempt other kinds of story in other genres, and the reception has been a lot more mixed
also worth noting that while the tumblr hatedom has been very vocal, he's not universally reviled, in fact his latest season drew a lot of praise from fans
Jack Harkness was cool I guess but that's because John Barrowman is a cool guy
Well, case in point: Jack Harkness was actually introduced in a Moffat story, and imo some of his best moments come from it.
It was a two part story, "The Empty Child" and "The Doctor Dances", it's Moffat arguably at his best and if you want to see why anyone ever defended Moffat it might be worth a look.

One of my roommates got me to watch a few episodes. The episode where the Doc loses his memory was pretty cool, the second episode with MOISTURIZE ME, and 11's last episode were my favorites out of those.
the other canonical Moffat stories being "The Girl in the Fireplace" and "Blink", incidentally, though i've always been a big fan of "The Eleventh Hour", myself.
really i guess i felt Moffat mostly ran out of good ideas after series 5
not entirely, and it's not like everything he's done since was garbage, but i felt that his best episodes were from the first 5 series
this is how I feel, honestly
I like the episodes he did with Davies at the showrunner helm and series 5 was great but after that it just started becoming hit-or-miss for me, enough that when I heard about the way that the Ponds were sent off I just sort of gave up on it for a while; though I have watched a few early Clara episodes since then, I don't really keep up with it at all anymore
Clara was a decent companion to Eleven, though I can't help but feel like parts of her character were retreads of stuff we'd already seen during the Davies years. I haven't seen Capaldi in the Doctor role yet.
Moffat's in my black books, but that's because of what he did to Irene Adler rather than any of his DW work.
I will never stop being angry at that, as long as the earth turns
Oh yeah, that was terrible, but it was Sherlock, which i've largely lost interest in at this point.
i was pretty annoyed at what he did to the Brigadier, but i know he probably intended it to be respectful. To me it just seemed grotesque and distasteful.

You might like Capaldi, he's been very well-received.
There were two episodes i particularly liked during series 8, both of which were by Jamie Mathieson. He's collaborating on an episode with Moffat for series 9; i'm cautiously optimistic.
I mean, honestly, does no one remember that Adler's whole thing in her original story was getting happily married to a nice lawyer chap without getting harassed by her former lover? Not every female rival has to also appear dtf for the protagonist, people.
Well, i thought the way RTD handled Courtney's death was immensely tasteful and moving. After that, turning the Brig into a Cyberman just seemed so utterly *wrong* and outrageous to me.
i maintain that Christopher Eccleston's series had the best character arcs of any season since the revival, and Christopher Eccleston was an excellent Doctor (though since he was my first i am a bit biased)
Comments
Who is also called Emily.
i've seen a few but not so many that it struck me as weird
That sucks.
He has written some *very* good episodes, and some not so good ones. i don't agree that he 'can't write for crap'.

i guess this makes me some kind of hipster or crotchety old man or something but w/e :v
i dunno about the show's writers much, alls i know is that i really started losing interest 'round the time the 11th doctor showed up
