Dark Souls feels like a weird offspring of Morrowind, of all things. I actually did like Morrowind's elaborate skill system and emphasis on builds, but it felt unsuited to its overall gameplay. Dark Souls takes a lot of the same concepts but implements them better.
in terms of like, aesthetic, I can see where you're coming from, but they're very different games mechanically.
Dark Souls has more in common with like, fighting games, than it does most other RPGs, in terms of the combat system.
I'm talking more in terms of its skill system and emphasis on builds. Which is, uh, pretty much exactly what I said in my original post. I'm not mad or anything but this is what I mean when I say that it feels like people disagree with me for the sake of disagreeing sometimes.

maybe I have just not played enough Morrowind to know what you mean.

Why do I feel do guilty about buying stuff, like Sims 3 expansion packs, for myself? I'll enjoy them when they arrive and be really happy, but I can't help but feel really guilty.
And worried that my Windows 8 laptop won't run a game that is designed for Window XP computers.
I've got The Sims 3 with the Ambitions, Supernatural and Seasons expansion packs, and ordered two new ones from Amazon, and it works fine. But I worry that if I overload it with the expansion packs that it'll run really slowly and I won't be able to use it for University work.
It seems to run fine for now, so maybe I'm just worrying too much.
It still has a long battery life and everything seems to be working fine. It's not like I play on the Sims 3 all day, every day. I do it in stages and often give my laptop a couple of days off to recover.
Not wishing for it to bluescreen on me >_>
Worst comes to the worst, a new battery and/or graphics card may be needed.
The Matrix wasn't popular because it was original. In fact, independently, the elements that comprised it were cliched. They'd been done to death over and over again, and in places that weren't exactly obscure. For instance, Total Recall did the reality-is-a-simulation plot first (and did it better, in my opinion) and cyberpunk had been mainstream in cinema since the late 80s.
What most people (including the makers of the film themselves, as this sequence so painfully shows) misunderstood about The Matrix was that it was elegant in its simplicity. There was no deeper philosophical or socio-political commentary in it - it was just another story about fighting against the system. And that's what makes it timeless.
Instead of being reliant on the books of some dead Greek guy or some social context international viewers will have trouble relating to, it critiques elements of "the system" that are inherent traits of all social systems. The subordination of the individual to the collective, the creation and propagation of ideas that soon become the default mindset, the mindless routine...this is what makes the Matrix accessible to all viewers, and why it still draws people today.
Is the ending a not-so-subtle nudge-nudge-wink-wink to police brutality in America? Of course it is. Does it attempt to address this systemic problem in any deep, meaningful or complex way? Nope. It's just there to remind you that the system is bad, in language and imagery that American viewers can relate to.
Man is a most complex simple creature: see what he weaves, and how base his reasons for doing so.
No, I don't think The Matrix drew people because it "critiques inherent elements of all social systems." The main conceit is that there's either only one system, or that there are layers of systems, and it is ultimately the same system. And I don't think that's true.
There are systems we made. Systems we didn't. There are systems that arise as a result of other systems. There are systems that conflict with each other, systems that don't ever meet. There are systems that follow the same lines, that harmoniously act in concert, and there are systems that feed off each other. That to escape from one system is to enter another, or to establish a new system.
I think The Matrix is just really well-marketed. That it has become a cultural force because it is well-marketed. It got the ball rolling, and it continued to roll.
And I may have liked about half of it when I was a child, but there are things about it that I have always hated.

I like how you just keep finding Smarties lying around
The elite special forces unit, SHRINEMAIDEN, led by Sanae Kochiya (codename Faithful Snake) has orchestrated a takeover of the Palace of the Earth Spirits, and gained control of the new superweapon, Hisoutensoku.
SHRINEMAIDEN have stated that if their demands are not met within 24 hours, they will launch a nuclear strike against the Human Village. Their demands? The remains of legendary SHRINEMAIDEN commander, Big God.
Former SHRINEMAIDEN operative Reimu Hakurei has been sent to the Palace under the codename Transient Snake, under orders to defeat the rogue unit, and, if necessary, destroy Hisoutensoku.
Kinda want to write a story about a bar in Gensokyo, one of those hole in the wall kind of places that gets like, 2 customers a day. Use it for little vignettes.

So far my favorite class this semester is Statics
I got a 10/10 on my first quiz even
Which is impressive since I only answered one of the two questions and I answered half of it wrong
