it also feels a little strange to single out Pascal as an exception but maybe that's just because the only thing of his that people talk about is a particular fallacious argument
but i am saying it is unreasonable to single out scientists for having opinions on things that everyone else has opinions on.
philosophy and sociology and economics and politics are all things that we need to form some opinions on in order to function in society, regardless of a lack of training in those fields. so it is understandable for someone who is not trained to look up to someone they consider smarter than themselves for answers to those questions, even though there are people who actually have dedicated their lives to answering them, and it is reasonable for people to try and come up with their own answers even if those answers are not well informed
whereas you arent socially or ethically obligated to think about, like, frog reproduction or collapsing supernovae or whatever the fuck enthralls scientists so much
the quote's more about how someone will listen to a STEM scientist on a social issue and go "he's smart, he's a sciencer", way before they listen to a philosopher or what not (who has actually studied this shit) speaking on the same issue.
as a trained sciencer i can tell you there are a lot of people who are That Bad :(
this is a thing i do see a lot, and it does deserve to be criticized
i guess to me where the Ellul quote rubs me the wrong way is he goes beyond saying "why are you treating scientists' opinions on this with more respect than any other person's opinions" and suggests that scientists' opinions are actually notably *worse* than other people's
that seems an improbable charge, and a cruel thing to say

Pensees is a really good read, but nobody gives a shit because he made an argument Dick Dorkins doesn't like

I'm amazed at how many people gripe about Microsoft taking out the F8 shortcut for Safe Mode when the reason they did it is that modern computers literally boot too fast to physically press the F8 key in time

That said, I've found that if I want to get into the UEFI menu on this laptop I can hold down Esc.
I had to discover it on my own because there's no "Press Esc for settings" on screen and it's not mentioned in the manual at all.

i wasn't trying to be rude about that Ellul quote, i do remember plenty of stupid things that scientists have said, and i don't doubt what you have to say about Pascal either

I know "Princess of the Principality" is a bit redundant, but I like the sound of it
A few months ago might as well be ancient pre-history, how could it possibly have any bearing on the present?
Of course I haven't read that; do you think I read things people I follow write? It might as well not exist at all, and I dismiss it into thin air
Nothing means anything except how I want to feel at this present moment, so banish the past from your memory, and never look anywhere but where I want you to look
