    and Steven!
  • Touch the cow. Do it now.
Tool would be fine if it were just the instruments without the lyrix
  • My dreams exceed my real life
I feel you are all being very mean to her
  • they are actually pretty good at writing memorable songs too

it couldn't reconcile liking it with my desire to be cool and hip and whatnot

i like Dream Theater on Scenes from a Memory.

i'm not much into prog metal, really.  Which is weird because i like prog and have nothing against metal, but yeah.

I feel sorry for anyone who isn't a princess

    You'll never know the magic
  • imagei will watch the heck outta this pumpkin patch
    is Princess Anne magical
  • "pretentious" is supposed to mean "trying to come off as looking more sophisticated than it actually is"

in practice, it just means "i don't get it, but other people like it"
  • pprog metal, as a genre, encompasses a truly vast array of bad music. dw
  • but by all means listen to meshuggah, and cloudkicker, and kayo dot, and Mare
  • imagei will watch the heck outta this pumpkin patch
    i do like cloudkicker
  • We can do anything if we do it together.
I'm alright with the Liquid Tension Experiment, but hate Dream Theater themselves.

I suspect this means that I really just hate James LaBrie. I'm fine with this.

Nihilism just means "This person has a view, that I, personally, would feel very uncomfortable having"

what have DT done that makes them so bad?

but i like Muse (particularly Origin of Symmetry, Absolution and Black Holes & Revelations) and if anyone's pretentious it's Muse, so yeah, i'm not really calibrated to detect this kind of thing i guess
  • actually i like the progmetal band Corelia too but its literally just because of the vocalist who pushes all of the 'high-pitched male voice' buttons in my brain which just make the musical part of it go all gooey and helpless
  • srsly could listen to that dude sing for days
  • We can do anything if we do it together.

DT is just way too much bombast, not enough substance to me.

Then again, I don't mind Blind Guardian who are pretty much the textbook definition of that, so I don't know where I'm coming from either.
  • My dreams exceed my real life
The only good band is Mumford and Sons, everything else is nihilist garbage
  • Touch the cow. Do it now.
you would think I'd be all over prog metal, yet I've listened to very little of it.

robotic techwank competitions laid over intensely generic songwriting. only famous because of how fast and eerily precisely they play their instruments. its impressive in the way that someone solving a rubiks cube really fast is impressive, not in the way rthat a van gogh is impressive

i would class muse not as pretentious but as overly bombastic. but i fucking love bombast and used to be a huge muse fanboy when i was 14/15/16 so hey
  • imagei will watch the heck outta this pumpkin patch
    bombast can be fun, imo
  • imagei will watch the heck outta this pumpkin patch
i can understand not liking it though
  • Touch the cow. Do it now.
    van gogh is not impressive
  • My dreams exceed my real life
Starship Troopers and The Last Action Hero are the movies that prove audiences have no ability to understand satire.
  • Touch the cow. Do it now.
My roommate in college loved Starship Troopers. I was all "Pretty good satire, eh?"
    "Uh...satire?"

    true story

There has never been a time where Pretentious meant anything more than "I don't understand why others like this"

I'm not sure if I agree or not

    because Tool exists
I misread that as "because Tools exists" and got confused as I thought you were referring to me.

i can see your point, but i don't see that it renders the virtuousity any less impressive, even it's impressive in a qualified sense

and it doesn't make the melody on Overture 1812 or the chorus of The Spirit Carries On any less cheesily enjoyable to me

It's weird that eighties kids detest anime, considering that a whole lot of popular eighties shows had episodes animated in Japan, and you can tell because everyone suddenly starts looking a lot more anime on those episodes.
  • imagei will watch the heck outta this pumpkin patch
do eighties kids detest cowboy bebop?
  • My dreams exceed my real life
That was the only one it was okay to like.

Well it was. Then it was Gurren Lagann, then it was Jojo.
  • We can do anything if we do it together.
I thought FLCL was generally safe to like, too.
  • Touch the cow. Do it now.
    I like Azumanga Daioh
  • the only anime you are allowed to like is Show by Rock
  • My dreams exceed my real life
If I ever get around to watching Cowpoke Bebong, the episode with a character named Tongpu will be really weird for me.
  • Touch the cow. Do it now.
    Teekyu is good too

Cowboy Bebop is still worth watching regardless of any amount of overhype, IMO.

    The Mummy With Senpai

I don't think hype is the right word for why that episode will be really weird for really anyone who spent extended periods of time on TVT

  • Ys feels like an alternate universe version of Zelda that landed in our world somehow.

DIC was very anime; the patchwork of service studios they used seemed especially concentrated around Japan
  • I've learned to tolerate drama...except on the boat
this was DIC before they started descending into the depths of absolute irretrievable shit
