but i like Muse (particularly Origin of Symmetry, Absolution and Black Holes & Revelations) and if anyone's pretentious it's Muse, so yeah, i'm not really calibrated to detect this kind of thing i guess
actually i like the progmetal band Corelia too but its literally just because of the vocalist who pushes all of the 'high-pitched male voice' buttons in my brain which just make the musical part of it go all gooey and helpless

DT is just way too much bombast, not enough substance to me.
Then again, I don't mind Blind Guardian who are pretty much the textbook definition of that, so I don't know where I'm coming from either.

robotic techwank competitions laid over intensely generic songwriting. only famous because of how fast and eerily precisely they play their instruments. its impressive in the way that someone solving a rubiks cube really fast is impressive, not in the way rthat a van gogh is impressive
i would class muse not as pretentious but as overly bombastic. but i fucking love bombast and used to be a huge muse fanboy when i was 14/15/16 so hey

i can see your point, but i don't see that it renders the virtuousity any less impressive, even it's impressive in a qualified sense
and it doesn't make the melody on Overture 1812 or the chorus of The Spirit Carries On any less cheesily enjoyable to me
It's weird that eighties kids detest anime, considering that a whole lot of popular eighties shows had episodes animated in Japan, and you can tell because everyone suddenly starts looking a lot more anime on those episodes.

DIC was very anime; the patchwork of service studios they used seemed especially concentrated around Japan

it couldn't reconcile liking it with my desire to be cool and hip and whatnot
i'm not much into prog metal, really. Which is weird because i like prog and have nothing against metal, but yeah.
in practice, it just means "i don't get it, but other people like it"
I suspect this means that I really just hate James LaBrie. I'm fine with this.
